How to replace wheel stud... easy?

I've got an idea but never really had to do it.

I looked in a manual for my Miata and it mentions removing the hub and doing it on a press.
Is this necessary?

For some reason I always thought you could pound it with a hammer (like driving a nail) and it'd pop out the back. Then you insert the new stud and lighten a lug nut on it down to the rotor and torque till it pulls the stud tight into the hub hole.
Just need to take off the brake right?

That's how I've always done it (hammer). Just get a sacrificial nut and a bunch of washers to put over the new stud and draw it in with an impact gun. Just keep an eye on the back of the new stud and STOP as soon as it seats itself so you don't chew up the new threads on the stud.

Just be careful when you are hammering out the old stud, I've had a few go flying. They ricochet off the brake dust sheild, fender well, etc. and become a projectile to innocent shins. Wear some goggles too.
 
Yeah, it's pretty cool to press out a stud with a 5 pound sledge, and seeing how far you can make it bounce off of the plastic wheel well liner. =) I usually use spacers, like washers or something, as well as an open ended lug nut to pull in the new one. Like he said, just don't wail on it too hard, or you'll strip the threads. Oh, and I'd suggest using a tiny bit of grease or anti-sieze on the knurl of the new studs. It helps ease it into place a little.
 
I stripped the threads off the outer edge because one of the lugnuts Wheelmax sent me was the wrong thread pitch. It went on sbout 2.5 turns then got tough and I didn't even think it was binding. 18th lug you install you figure it'd be right.

I did the stud replacement today in about 15 minutes.

EASY! I whackedit with a hammer 2 times and it popped out. I then ran the new stud in and added spacers and tightened down a lugnut and that was it.

If you use an impact wrench use vice grips or something to keep the back end from spinning. I had to cut one of the studs off because of that so be aware of that.

I used a 5 foot bar extension and it was pretty easy.
 
Does anybody have instructions on how to replace a wheel stud for the rear drums?
I broke one at the last autox... and finally have time to replace it.
 
Wheel studs are the same front to back. You need to get a BFH (a big hammer) to push the stud out of the hub. If you have to hit it hard enough to do damage to any other part of the car, get a cut-off wheel or a sawz-all to get through it.

You can drill the center out if it broke off. That will lessen the pressure that's holding it to the hub. Lube your bit well, because it'll get really hot. Then it should be easier to pound out.
 
So I don't have to remove the brake calipers/discs/drums?

Just hammer out the old one and pull in the new one?

on a rear drum they are probably going to be attached to the axle/hub itself and run through the drum, so yes you will at least have to remove the drum, maybe even the axle/hub. I personally havent looked at the rear of the protege so i cant be 110% but you will have to at least take off the drum im sure of that.
 
so for the front you just need to take the caliper off and take the rotor off? then pound off the broken one?
 
IF my memory serves me correctly the front is also two pieces, and you could probably get by with just knocking the old one out and putting the new one in. it also has a hub that holds the stud
 
but it's easy to figure out? by myself?

Im thinking of doing it this afternoon or something.

so i tried it, looks like im missing a hex tool.

Can someone put up a semi how to with a list of tools and whatnot with some crude steps please?
