Is there any way I can have my stock 03 Protege radio play MP3? I would prefer to keep the stock radio.

Will I have to replace my stock radio with an aftermarket unit?

the oem unit is not set up to read mp3 files. You will have to upgrade to an aftermarket.

u cannot play an mp3 file on a stock radio. an mp3 file is compressed and will not play in an ordinary cd player. u will need 2 upgrade 2 an aftermarket. (this is for the regular protege sedan and protege 5)

my bad, forgot about plugging in an external device. i was thinking more along the lines of sticking a burnt cd into the stock cd player.

yeah i think thats what he wants but i thought i'd throw this option out there

Apparently Sony, Pioneer and Alpine make CD shuttles that work with RF frequencies that you can install in the trunk, and they have a seperate display unit/controller, but you can hook them up to your head unit via the antenna.

so basically you only use your h/u as a player playing a FM channel.

Hope this helps you.
