How to - PADDLE SHIFT Retrofit (Mazda CX-5 2.0)

ADVICE SEEKING:
I could have completed 95% of this retrofit, but could not understand the last step which required wiring to +/- switch. Anyone could chime in and help which wire and where to do so? thanks advance

OEM MAZDA PADDLE-SHIFT KIT
You would need to purchase this oem kit from your local dealership, or from taobao.com (as what i did)

Step 1:
STEERING WHEEL TAKE-OFF

These are tools which would be very helpful

Locate 3 screws behind the wheel. This pic below will demonstrate

Turn-on engine and steer the wheel to these positions, this well help to remove the

There are "springs" behind the airbag, we need to "unlock" the clip in-order-to remove airbag from the wheel, for details check-out pic below

DO NOT UNPLUG THE AIR-BAG FOR NOW

Step 2:
TAKE-OFF BATTERY

This is a very important step, we need to unplug the battery

Step 3:
AIR-BAG REMOVAL

Stock part are ready to install paddleshift kit

Secure the air-bag in safe place and be gentle while handling it

Step 4:
PADDLE SHIFT INSTALLATION

This is the paddle shift kit, comes with screws and wiring

Step 5:
PADDLE SHIFT WIRING

5.1

5.2 Take-off the steering column cover. This is required to access the wiring behind it

This shows the location of 2 plugs (left & right)

I never did get around to do something similar on my G35. The air bags cause be pause...

To me, it doesn't look that bad. You can put back everything to stock and then claim warranty work.

Dealerships have to PROVE a modification caused a failure to be denied. So thats not really a worry id say. Specially considering its all OEM parts. I doubt a dealership would even catch it in all truth.

Does this work for the 2.5 engine with AWD? Seems like it would be a cool add on for the future. I wonder why mazda doesn't put it to begin with now that the 2016 has sport mode?

So looking at some pictures and online parts diagrams it looks like the steering wheel is the same as the new Mazda6 which has paddle shifters. That being said I think that it is feasible that the parts could be ordered state side and wired up to work. Does anyone have any experience in trying this out? I am highly considering the new 2016 CX-5 as my next car, might have the wife on board, but there are few things that I wish the car had: Paddle shifters, memory seats are the biggest ones. Can't do anything about the memory seats but this mod for the paddle shifters seems viable.

I'm VERY interested. It looks like this could be done for around $150. The only problem I see is translating that wiring modification, and will it work without any ECU adjustments?

Someone state side needs to try this out with a 2.5 engine and see if it works. I think it would but would want to know before trying myself. And I don't actually have a CX-5 yet, but will in the next couple of months. Hoping that memorial weekend turns up some good incentives and bonus cash offers. I'd like to get the 2016 CX-5 AWD GT with tech and I-activsense for 30,000 or under. That number might be a bit ambitious but I will try none the less.

Sweet! So hard was it? Where did you get the parts? How much? Was the wiring difficult to figure out? Anything have to be done to re-program the ECU? How does it function? will it only work when in the Manual mode on the center selector or can you paddle shift in full auto put the computer over ride if your revs get to high? Please, pretty please get us some more info. I so want to do this when I get my CX-5!

Watched the video and I don't understand why he was shifting with the paddle shifters at 4000rpm. Seems like he would have had better times if he shifted around 5500-6000rpm. Either way I'm not too concerned with 0-60 times, I just think paddle shifter would be fun to play with. I drive a manual know and I imagine my hands would want to do something while driving.

He also said the car had updated window switches that have one touch up and down for all windows and illumination for all switches, I wonder if that switch could be put into the CX-5? One touch up and down is a very nice feature, I love it in my wifes audi.
