How to install a K&N SRI

After much looking and asking I decided on the Typhoon intake for my car. I decided because a few people had talked about the directions not being very clear (which they aren't) I thought I would try to contribute something to the forum.

Anyway, here we go...

Thanks to my my very lovely fiancee' and her picture taking abilities, she helped greatly. As well as her small hands and her able to reach down into small areas when I dropped tools and bolts too lol.

The few pics I didn't take were easy... remove the battery cover and disconnect the negative battery terminal.. there are a few tabs that you just have to pull to allow it to lift off.

ALL OE BOLTS ARE 10mm, and all new clamps are 8mm.

The engine cover has only 2 bolts which are 10 mm and the whole thing lifts off. The other part is the two snaps that are on the intake box and you can then remove the cover of it.

You have to then remove the MAF sensor... this is a pic of the plastic piece that clips and holds the MAF wire loom in place... reach under it and squeeze it and lift up.. a little tricky, but it looks like this once out.

Before removing the intake box and such you will need to remove the breather tube... this is easy, but can be a little tricky... look for the blue clips that are attached at the intake tube that looks like this (note this is after removal)

The other side goes to the TMIC and the clips are green, remove these the same way and take the whole tube off and put it away.

using a screw driver to press the tabs down can be helpful...

This is a pic of the few bolts that hold in intake box in... remove both of them and the bracket that you see here.

Intakeinstall054.jpg

Here's a pic of the MAF unplugged... now take the worm clamps loose on both the intake box and where it clamps to the TIP.

Intakeinstall045.jpg

Now pull the intake tube away from the airbox like so. The airbox will still feel like it has bolts holding it on, but it's not. There are rubber grommets that hold the box in place so just give the box a good pull and it will come up.

These are the grommets underneath
Intakeinstall058.jpg

this is the underside of the intake box and the two pieces that go into the grommets
Intakeinstall059.jpg

Ok now the next step is to remove the intake tube... you already should have your worm clamp loose from earlier, but in case you forgot, do it now and get it very loose. The bolt on my car I had to use a box end wrench.
Intakeinstall048.jpg

To get this tube off you have to PULL! It's really stuck in there, so pull, but don't fall back or i'll be :neener: at you. Here is the tube pulled off.

Intakeinstall053.jpg

Next remove the 2 rubber grommets from where the airbox was attached... they look like this..
Intakeinstall058.jpg

here they are removed...
Intakeinstall060.jpg

Now. put the new silicone coupler on the TIP the smaller end will go on here...

Intakeinstall063.jpg

tighten down..
Intakeinstall064.jpg

Notice the very small amount of room here... this will come into play later.

At this point (or any really you will need to remove the other part of the intake that is under the front of hood... not easy to get a good pic of it, but there are 2 tabs you have to lift up on to remove it...
Intakeinstall056.jpg

Take the rubber piece that looks like a drum and mount it to the hole where the grommet was on the right side of the car like so. You will use a large washer on the bottom and top of the hole.. the bottom isn't easy if you don't have smaller fingers, so just hold the washer and nut in place and screw the drum piece down.

Now you can take the heat shield and use the long rubber piece needed to go around the heat shield and install it. Go around one side, and then just cut it off and go around the other. There is aluminum inside of it to ensure a good fit, just make sure it seats down on it well.

Intakeinstall070.jpg

Trim off any excess and you're good to go.

Intakeinstall071.jpg

Next, you will install the heat shield bracket... I didn't get a pic of this... but the K&N instructions are clear... at least on this part, so mount the bracket and the shield.

The instructions will show installing the MAF sensor, and intake breather onto the main pipe... no big deal, just be careful with the tube, as it is plastic and to much pressure could break it.

Intakeinstall076.jpg

The bracket that goes to the intake pipe is also very easy to see in K&N's instructions and isn't a big deal to install.

Now you will install the tube. This part is a pain because of the lack of room, so take the worm clamp, and put it on first and get it even all the way around and hold it in place.

Here is the tube installed...
Intakeinstall080.jpg

Remove the top bolt from the (pop off valve as K&N calls it lol) and put it away... you won't need it anymore.

Slide the tube into place and try to keep the worm clamp from moving back to far... tighten it down with a flat head or 8mm socket. Once the tube is in place, you will take the long bolt that came with the kit that isn't threaded the whole way, and the metal spacer and with the spacer on, slide the bolt through the bracket and tighten it down. You may need to tighten and loosen some of the other parts in order to get the piece to fit just right, so you should wait to tighten it all down until everything is in position correctly.

Intakeinstall079.jpg

Now, loosen the worm clamp on the filter, and push it on the intake tube and tighten it down again with either the flathead or the 8mm socket.

Intakeinstall082.jpg

That's it! Plug your MAF back in, run your new breather tube, put your battery box cover and engine cover back on and you're good to go.

Finished:

Hope this helps! Good luck.

Who did you order the K&N Typhoon Air Intake System from? That is something I'm wanting to do with my new '11 Speed3. I hate not being able to hear any noise. lol
