How-to: DIY Custom MSP FMIC

Hopefully that 8" height won't make it like that nasty black speed on Ebay the one time. The IC was hanging below the front bumper...ew

Yea :( I decided I didn't want to deal with hacking the bumper bar, so I bought a smaller Corksport FMIC. w00t! :D

Finally someone that thinks like me that owns an MSP...i always look at prices for parts for these cars and think people are nuts for what they pay...I acctually plan to make my own FMIC kit with some aluminized steel pipping, I can wel so i can going to trya nd make a nice clean set-up...i am going to use your write up as an aid, I like your hot side pipping but has anyone tried to clock the compressor housing and run other routes?...or a FMIC with inl;et/outlet on one side or with top and bottom end tanks...I'm still in the planning phase but glad there are some other MSP DIY guys here...

Also how does the car run with the blow throw MAF...any negatives, I'm pretty weary of that set-up...why did you opt for that method?

people are scared of relocated maf because of the pressure that the tiny needle has to go thru on the pressure side.

on another note

i believe is hard to clock the turbo because of the way the WasteGate Actuator is...

at least that's what i've heard

yea relocating the MAF increases the preasure that the MAF sees and I think would increase the likely-hood of failure or cut down on its longevity...any reason to run a blow through other than to VTA??

I'll look at clocking when I am in there replacing my acctuator, a new bracket could be fabbed for the acctuator if thats the problem...

very good how-to...however, can u take pics on how u routed the piping around the foglight wells?...my pipes are currently hitting the wells so i may end up cutting my bumper...

I just barely trimmed the fog light mounts at the corners(i want to say inside corner?). Let me know if i can be of any more help to ya. Thanks
Derrick

hmm...i think i should be fine...i just ended up picking up a couple 45 degree couplings to get it to fit around there...just gotta wait for them to arrive...

FYI, I was having trouble locating just regular flat betal bars for the IC brakcets. I came across this place.

I wound up ordering 4ft of flat bar aluminum in 1/8" x 1" to play around with.

So what's the performance like with this FMIC?

Do you think that it's about as good as a bolt-on type (more expensive) kit? I'm all about the DIY . . . and this sounds like fun.

How much more turbo lag do you get this way? Is it noticeable over stock?

Well the gains were impresive
me and one of my buddy did the same project over his speed few days ago, all i can say is WoW + he boosted her up to 10
i did not feel any turbo lag though, will see how it turns out on my msp
once i get mine, ill post some pics

If anything my turbo would spool quicker. I would say that with a slightly thicker intercooler this diy project could be very similar to the 'high dollar' kits. Don't get me wrong, it's a great improvement over stock, but with a little better i/c, it would be in the same leageau as the others.

Hay man, how long did it take them to ship your FMIC and extra pipes?
tnx

who did you order yours from on eBay.
I found a place called Just Intercoolers (on eBay) that seems ridiculously cheap.

Cool --

So yours was 28 x 7 x 2.5. Are you thinking that it would be better to get one 3.5" thick or ????? What would make the IC better IYO?

I think you said that 7" is about the max height that will fit acceptably, is that right? Or would 8" fit okay as well?

Just curious . . . I want to know if I have options ya know.

When your buddy raised the boost to 10 (able to because of better cooling/flowing IC?) did he have any other issues to change? What other supporting mods did he have?

I'm just wondering if I can get away with installing a custom 3" exhaust and this DIY IC setup and set the boost to 9 or so.
