If you take out the glove box. Have a good look underneath. There is a big plug under there next to a big metal box which is your airbag assembly. Not to sure about the steering wheel one. I'm sure someone knows. I would unhook the battery before messin with it. And yeah why disable a safety feature. Plus I think it's illegal. But who cares it's your ride
You should be fine if you disconnect the battery (both cables) HOWEVER you wanna give at least 30 minutes for the capacitor to discharge before doing anything, otherwise their is a chance it'll go off.
I'll echo what has been said above...disabling safety features to limit damage seems counterintuitive. You have no way of predicting whether you will need the airbags or not, so why not just leave them working?
A fender bender is not going to set off your airbags, if that's what you're worried about.
Those things will only go off in major collisions (when you really need it).
