How to break my car in correctly?

anyone know exactly how i'm supposed to break my car in? change my oil at 1000 miles? drive it like u stole it?? can those of you who have had no problem whatsoever with their 3 2.3 manual tell me what they did during the break in period? thanks alot

I took it kind of easy but with occasional times of play and changed the oil at 1000 and then again at 5000. Now I'm doing every 5000 after that. Didn't do anything else for break-in.

more the reason for a crate motor :p but yeah 1st 20 mi to sett the piston rings or something to that effect.

Read the manual, it's in there. Why listen to what random people on the internet say when the nice engineers at Mazda who BUILT the thing put it in the book? Basically it says just not to accelarate too quickly, race the engine, etc.

the same nice mazda engineers say no synthetic engine oil as well ;) If you car lasts 10 years with no dealer maitnence then they get no money fixing and repairing it...

engineers can't write books.. i would know :D [ERTW]

but seriously.. if i sold you a PC and then told you "you do NOT need to run antivirus software" would u do it? well i would get your business again and again and make more money off you ..

anwyay.. when i get mine.. it'll be WOT shift WOT.. ;)

1st 20 miles granted the engine is slightly broken in on the line...and 2.3 owners if you have the cartridge setup dealership is the only place you can go to get it changed(I do my own ;) )...also the book says take car to dealer for headlight bulbs replacement cause it's way too "ase certified" advanced for most people to tinker with.

this mechanics at my mazda dealer told me to drive the car normally and dont be gentle just cuz its a new car. You can even drive hard but just don't go racing with it. The car has to get use to your driving for the first few k..
but.. i dont know.. read so many out there.. getting confuse now..

the clutch is what really needs breaking in

if you don't go easy on that at first it'll glaze over quickly

ive never heard of someone telling me to drive hard when i first drive the car? if i bought a new car i always would break it in slowly, never rev over 3g rpm, dont drive hard at all...

just the 1st 20 mi on the odo....after that gentle....if the car sat on the lot and aquired more than 20 don't try and cetch up by doing another 20 hard.

Ok ok ok...the perfect way to do it is actually a miz of both opinions. I have heard this from numerous mechanics who build many engines. Overall you have to be easy on it, but you should tac it out SEVERAL times during the first 600 miles. Don't keep the rpms constant, and don't beat on it, BUT to set and define the tolerances within the engine, you need to get full RPM range several times during the break in period. Many techs have told me this results in more HP in the long run, due to the engine having higher tolerances.

Unfortunetly, my car came from another dealer, so when I got it it already had 60 miles on it. So I can't try the first 20 mile test. But when it gets a few hundred miles on it I'll start being a bit more racey with it. Since this is my first brand new car, I'm afraid to try anything too drastic.

I just read the manual for the 3s

it says to drive normal BUT:
1. Don't Race the Engine (while stopped)
2. Don't keep sustained speeds for long periods of time
3. Don't do any full throttle launches for the 1st 1K miles

Also, at the dealer they said to drive it normal . . . even the Owner's Manual says there is no specific break in period. The salesman I spoke w/ said that the Variable Valve Timing helps somehow :shrugs: Dunno how, but hey cool :D

Hope this helps you guys :D

eh beat the heck out of it.... how do you think we pdi the cars? Drive them like grandmas?

What about synthetic oil?

We just ordered our SP23 and the dealer said it would have less than 5 miles on it when we get it. He said nothing about specific break in stuff and said to change the oil at 1000 miles, He also said to not use synthetic oil until 10,000 miles on the car. I was going to put synthetic in it right off the bat. Anyone have any opinion on the Oil and when I should change it for the first time and if I can use synthetic right away? (help)

well if the dealer said to change the oil every 1000k miles and you want to use synethtic, that means your probably going to spend 40 bucks if you get it done at a oil change place, if not a little cheaper. but every 1000k miles spending 40 bucks, thats pretty hefty, i would probably just go with the regualar 10w30 or whatever oil you use. about the oil ask the dealer what kind of oil they recomend for a first buy car.
