How much does the rear seat weigh?

I wasn't really sure were to post this thread so I posted it here. Any way...

Does anyone know how much the rear seat weighs? Or approximately how much?

I plan on putting my Mazda2 on a diet and if the rear seat is heavy enough then it's going to get removed. I already removed the spare tire, jack, and carpet from the rear cargo area. I plan on getting a Seibon carbon fiber hood and rear hatch, and maybe deleting my A/C for further weight savings.

you are getting serious ! ;) Remember it won't be legal for STF Class without the AC or the carbon fiber hood, but sure I want to see how light you can get.

can't remove anything bolted down for stf as far as i am aware, i've seen people running carbon fiber hoods though.

Carbon fiber hoods will pass local events.

Andres

This. CF hood will not pass on a national level, and someone on a regional level COULD protest you. Will they? Probably not.

Removing your rear seats is also not ST legal and will put you straight into SM.

Removing A/C actually IS legal, only if the car was sold in the US without it. I removed AC from my miata, but in order to do that I had to remove any options that the non AC model didn't come with, such as power windows. I even had to replace the HVAC knob with one that didn't have a A/C button.

Would the Mazda2 even be competitive in SM class? I've done a few local autocross events but I mostly go to track days at my local road course (Nelson Ledges Road Course). Every time I go to track days I'm usually in B class and I hope one day they will bump me up to A class.

In case you are wondering my local road course splits the field of track day cars into 3 classes which are A, B, and C. A class has really fast cars with experienced drivers, B class has fast cars with experienced drivers or really fast cars with amateur drivers, C class is the beginners class regardless of a cars ability's.

Also rememebr the rear seats come in two pieces. The 'seat' and the seat back. the 'seat' itself is NOT even a little bit 'bolted' down... but it probably wont save you more than 20lbs... The rear seatback was fairly heavy if i recall when i had to remove it.

Well I didn't know that either. Still, If I'm going to remove the seat then all of it is coming out. It sounds like the whole rear seat has got to weigh close to 60lbs. That's a lot of weight to be saved for the Mazda2.

Just paint the CF hood, super secret lol

Now we're talking lol! The big vents in the Seibon Carbon fiber VS Style hood would be a little obvious lol. I'm hoping the vents in the VS hood will help aid in cooling.

I took out my rear seat for about a month for a test, threw it back on to start autocrossing, but i wouldn't say 60LB's.

If i had to guestimate, the rear folding part, the parts that is actually bolted down, is heavy, i would say just shy of 35 pounds or so. The butt foam part that is just press-clipped in only weighs about a good 4 pounds.

I would say 40-50lbs.. Mine have been out for almost a year now, and carrying the whole rear setup down into my basement, wasn't the easiest thing ever lmao

In 10 years all of these back seats which were pulled out will be brand new looking and the front seats will look a little sun faded lol.

Looks like I'll be wrestling mine to my basement as well lol.

I'm hoping with the rear seat delete, A/C system stripped out, and carbon fiber hood and rear hatch that I should shave off a little over 100lbs. Although, 100lbs may be a little optimistic.

As i said before,

The rear seats, upper and lower with the seatbelt brackets is about 20kg's
rear upper = ~17-18kgs
lower cushion = ~1.5-2kg
seatbelt bracket = ~0.5kg

42-44lbs :)

I don't remember exactly the numbers because it has been 3 years from the day that i put them on the scale.

I want to turbo my 2 -- I figure it HAS to be cheaper than buying a new car...

The hood most likely would net you 1-2 pound savings if you swapped to carbon fiber. Not sure about the hatch I would guess 8-10 lbs.

From my research significant weight can be removed from Exhaust, battery, wheels, tires,

AC delete probably 20-25 LBS and the rear seat 40-45 LBS Hollis had his car @ 2096? Andres @ 2140 Where are you with weight?

The stock hood is pretty lightweight, I have had our hood off several time unfortunately.

You could go the dry ice path and take out a few more lbs out of the chassis.

It took me about 5 hours total once the carpet was pulled out of the car.

Where are you with weight?

So far I have installed 949 racing wheels that saved me about 20 pounds all together and I installed a Corksport catback exhaust with race-pipe and that saved me about 5-10 pounds. The only other thing I have done to save weight is remove the spare tire, jack, and carpet/foam from the rear cargo area which saved about 25lbs.

I am probably close to stock weight and I am looking for ways to lighten the car without making it unbearable to drive everyday. The rear seat is looking like it will get the axe. I may delete the A/C system considering I live up north, and the summers are short, and it doesn't get that hot.
