my friend has a rex and he switched from mineral oil to syn oil recently. He said he paid around $90 or somthing to actually switch.. i thought it was a bit pricey for an oil change but he said that was for something that needed to be changed in the car in order to use syn oil. Now that its changed, he says it'll cost him regular price.. $90 for an oil change sounds kinda........ expensive? i dont know if he got jipped or not.. and is it true you have to get something changed in the car before u switch to syn oil?

That seems sorta ridiculous...
My gf did it at Jiffy Lube, and it only cost her $50, and i thought that was expensive because you can get quarts for a few bucks each, and do it yourself. And i can't recall hearing anything about having to change anything before you switch, just your oil filter like usual.

I generally spend $50 every oil change. That's for four qts of Royal Purple Racing 21 + Wix filter. Racing 21 is normally the most expensive out of them all, too.

And no, there's no "switch". He got seriously ripped off.

true syn, like t3ase uses, is more expensive but still ~$10 a quart i believe. mobil 1 syn and all others like that are only $5 or so a quart. there is nothing needed to switch, he got boned.

thats what a i thought.. anyways thanks for the info ^^ oh, do i just go to the dealer or where ever i get the oil change and request for syn oil the next time?

change your own oil, its VERY easy, as long as you grease the filter seal good before putting a new one on.

and expect to pay $4 - $6 or a quart of full-synthetic.

so my oil changes cost me about $25 (I buy my oil by the gallon) when I do it myself. there, saved $25 :)

i pay $4.79/quart for Moble 1 and $11.95(I think) for a Moble 1 filter.

About $33 for the whole thing

You can but 5 quart containers of Moble 1 at walmart for cheap.

the walmart here sells 5w-30 mobil 1 for 4.08 a QT.
I use STP filters... which are about 3-4 each.
So i spend less than 20 per change.
:)

Damn, I drive 1000 miles a month, oil changes come quick for me:D

Never looked into Royal Purple, I go with Mobil1 5-W30..~4-5/quart and a ~11-12 PureOne Oil filter.

Do it yourself!

Another suggestion if you're concerned about warranty.. Go buy some syntehetic oil and then take it to your dealer. Let the dealer use a Mazda filter but use your supplied oil. That way they have written verification that oil changes were done by a qualified technician in the case of an engine problem.

I don't do this but after reading on some other forums, mainly the S2000 one, I wish I had. Not only does it let you build a relationship with your service department, it also gives them some non-warranty money which always makes them happy. They're much more likely to help you out with things if you go in there for non-warranty work. Again, I need to take my own advice here but just don't have the cash for it at the moment. Oh well. :)

well, actually how many miles does your car have? the reason i ask is because if you run synthetic oil with less than 12k miles... your car will never break in due to the fact that synthetic is too soft.
but right when i break that 12k mark im running AMSOIL, i ran it in my BMW and i love it.
oh... and i have had my car for just under a month and i have already used 1900 miles...

how about you do it yourself and save urself $40?
I get my Mobil 1 and a WIX filter for 27.00$ at O'reilly's.
I change at 5k miles and drive about 100 miles a day.

You can switch to synthetic at around 5k or 6K (miles) with no worries. At that point you don't have anything that still has to break in, especially if you left the break in oil in the whole time like the manual says.

Almost all the break in happens in the first few hundred miles of running. After that it's just fine honing of all the bearing surfaces. Once you switch to synthetic you basically eliminate metal to metal wear.
