not to be a dick, but most people here have bought ONE maybe TWO engagement rings. ill trust people that sell the things for a living and work int he upper management of the places that do over someone on a car forum, just my two cents.

That's like saying you would trust a car sales man when he says you're getting a good deal.

Trust no one. There are plenty of websites and publications out there that will help you choose the right ring. Read several and you will have an understanding of what you are looking for.

I do agree that if you're driving a Protege, 10K is too much to spend. Your woman would rather you save the money for a down payment on a house once you're married. The industry says "Two months salary"...well I think one month is more than adequate (after taxes).

Hmm... lets play with that 10K ring...

If you were to spend 10K on a ring and you followed the two months salary guestimate then you would have to be bringing home 5K a month after taxes.

Assume the govt takes 1/3 your salary and multiply by (3/2) to get your monthly salary before taxes. That is roughly 7.5K a month.

Now multiply that by 12 months to get your annual salary before taxes. That would be...hmm 90K a year.

Who here makes 90K??? If you did, would you be driving a Protege???

(10K / 2mo = 5K/mo * 3/2 = 7.5K/mo * 12mo/y = 90K/y)

Or, you could ask someone such as myself, who doesnt sell to the public anyway, yet would offer key insight to those looking for something since i have been in the profession for years.


The internet teaches you how to spend money. To really understand things like RI and types of stone inclusions, you need to go to school for it. Sure, the sources are probably available to joe blow, but the internet is not credible my friend.

Hi... girl opinion here...

my ring was picked out by him, i love it just for the fact it is from him. but i say its too big, i have a 1.25 karat round diamond center with 3, 0.25 karat diamonds on each side, its beautiful... but i am not a jewlery kinda girl (bring on the CF) so i am always getting it caught on something, scratching myself with it... seriously, i love shiny things so maybe a 1/2 karat with little chips... i hate when people stop me and say "let me see your ring" im like "wtf! let go of my hands!" i dont want them looking at my dirty hands, i was just working on the truck. but then most girls arent like me.
