So i just thought of a question, how long do you guys usually let your turbo cool off till?? or what is the specific amount of time before you should turn it off after a lil nice drive? I'm usually waiting for like 2-3 min. before I turn it off?? is this ideal or no?

I have the Viper 5902 remote car starter with pager and I have the built-in turbo timer set to 30 seconds. I've heard it's the adequate setup for a turbo..

Manual says 30 secs. I use my own theory. I have a boost gauge installed on my 7. Usually when I am driving to a place and pulling into places to park, such as my driveway, I am using no boost as per my gauge and I shut off my car right away. I figure the idle time as I'm coasting down the road to my driveway, or easing into parking spaces is about 30 seconds of no boost. If I was hammering on the car and was in boost for a long time, I would def not shut off the car right away, but because I can physically tell I am not in boost as well as coasting into parking spots or into my driveway (little throttle use), that time is typically enough for the turbo to cool down.

Not sure if Im doing any harm, but since I am not in boost for at least 30 seconds while performing those maneuvers, in theory I should be fine.

If I've leaned on mine, I give it a minute or so. The last three minutes of my commute are at residential speed, so it gets some advance cool-down. I've been known to set two fans on the motor, one blowing down around the intake and one blowing up near the PS tank. Can't figure out why this aluminum motor holds heat so long. My Ram with its big ol' cast iron V8 cools off faster.

I usually wait to turn the engine off until the vehicle comes to a complete stop.

Seriously, ever since turbos were refined and now have both oil lines and water cooling lines with separate water jackets, devices like turbo timers are obsolete. Your stock coolant system continues an automatic thermal syphoning action to work water through the turbo center housing long after shut down.

Also to avoid "coking" of the center shaft journals it is usually better to run full synthetic oil, since it has a much higher ability to withstand high heat. Regular oils can break down and leave these "coke" deposits reducing oil clearances in the journals and journal bearings.

The only time I let a modern turbocharged car (this is my fourth following two Saabs and a Volvo) is after very extended high engine load operations. Probably not even necessary then unless you've been driving at sustained speeds up in the triple digits. Then maybe let the engine idle 30 seconds or so.

This is really not an issue unless you have driven the engine extremely hard for a prolonged time.

+1 to "nothing special."

The 30-60 seconds I drive through my apartment complex at 15-20 mph in 4th gear (or parking garage at 5mph), combined with the time it takes me to gather my belongings, is plenty.

so true
the underhood heat is incredible

all this work we do with the intercooler.......... touch one of the intake runners, haha I dare you

My 2008 Mazdaspeed 3 Owner's manual states this:
After driving at freeway speeds or up a long hill, idle the engine at least 30 seconds to cool the turbo before turning off the engine. Avoid simply shutting the engine off abruptly after a hard or long drive. Damage to the turbocharger may result.

Since most of my driving is daily driving to work, I just turn it off.

On my old turbo car, I had a Blitz Turbo Timer that automatically calculated the cool down time based on how much boost you were running and for how long you were boosting.
