How insane is a 140mph+ speedometer?

cx5 turbo will touch 130mph.
I used to have an old 2.5t Plymouth Voyager with an 85mph speedo that would wrap the needle around the bottom. I think the previous owner did some modding though.

Most of the other cars I've had do it the opposite way, I just assumed it was a parts bin thing. Share the same part number speedo with a lot of models.

My speedo goes from 0 to 140 mph and puts 70 at the top (12 o'clock). 60 at 11:55 and 80 at 12:05. It makes sense to put the range of safe speed at the top. 55 mph is for trucks and vehicles towing.

Apparently putting speeds faster than what the car can actually manage is to deter you from speeding, to keep the vehicles optimal or intended speed in the first half of the speedometer.

I've hit a high MPH in my 2014 NA 2.5L before (I-80 in Wyoming). I don't really drive like that anymore though. Amazing I never got a ticket doing that back in the day.

What's even crazier is the speedometer on my CX-5 goes up to 160 MPH. As if! 😂

If it were even 120, that would put 55mph at the top.
Yeah, that's a peeve of mine. The large scale to look cool makes it difficult to dicern actual speed quickly and intuitively.

The top number should be around 100 and there would be room to label all of the 10s

I know there are some speedometers where the inaccuracy of the speed it indicates increases as the speed of the car goes up. My guess is a speedometer that has a pretty high upper speed measurement is done so the main part of where most people drive falls within acceptable accuracy tolerances.
