How did this guy get 70MPG?!

It looks like as in this review the CX-5 is a Manual Trans Sport model, so the stick can make a huge difference when using the "hypermileing" techniques. Though I have to say that the Automatic Trans is pretty good, this will show you why the Manual Trans can be superior. I would imagine that they are fairly proficient at the various techniques the hyper-milers use BEFORE they ever got into this. I found it interesting the mention that the Escape EcoBoost only got 50 or so MPG.....

It can be done using driving techniques that aren't conducive to allowing other traffic to flow normally,..slow speed increases, with all driving in 4th and 5th gear just about plus plenty of *angelling* in neutral. You'need your own lane to do this. They have max-mpg runs where everyone is basically allowed to act as moving traffic jams from time to time,..especially with electric cars, coasting while recharging the batteries back thru the trans and also using solar-cell panels to suck juice from the sun :-)

If you read the article... here is the route they took.

"the top speed was 55 and the bottom was of course 0. Avg speed was 41 mph with 8 traffic lights, ~ 10% city and maybe 8-miles of two lane through the construction on I-94"

This doesn't shock me at all - There are a few areas of town where we can go 10-15 miles, flat at 45-55, and we'll return 40-45 mpg. This is without trying and in our automatic.

He was using pulse and glide, which is when you accelerate to speed and then shut the engine off and coast in neutral to a lower but safe speed and then repeat. That is one technique that hypermilers use with manual trans cars that really gets those big numbers. You can not do that with an automatic or you'll damage the transmission.

They literately turn the car off while coasting? or just take their foot off the accelerator?

When not cruising on the freeway, MTX's other major advantage comes into play with engine braking or coasting, where the injectors ceases nearly all fuel injection, while the engine becomes basically a mechanical air pump.

Shutting the engine off = steering lock.... but I hear that isn't a problem on most American roads!

I have a manual Sport and you cannot shut off the engine if the car is moving. I tried repeatedly while in a wide open parking lot.
