I have a 2007 mazda5, with the 6 disc in dash cd player, no cassette player. I want to install an aux input so I can listen to itunes or pandora in the car but cant figure out how to take the stuff apart. Has anyone done this? How hard is it? Would it be easier to just replace the whole thing with a new cd player that already has an aux input?

Either way you'll have to take the dash apart.
Check out THIS thread:
You'll have to decide after getting the dash apart if it's worth the money for a new stereo with all the features you want, or just to add the aux port as shown in the thread.

Check out that thread... but replacing your head unit would be a good idea.

Why do you want auxiliary input? For an non-apple .mp3 player? For an iPod? What is better than aux in is a front-facing USB input, just put your music or podcast files on a flash drive and plug it in.

That's a good point. If you are not concerned with thief and such, mind as well replace the unit since you have to take everything apart. Quality units are so cheap.

@ Heat - downloading is sooo yesterday (valley girl) ;) Stream to infinity and beyond for unlimited media (4G)! Aux-in is the only way to get sound to the speakers :( However, the USB's integrated play back and info display is nice!

If you're using something that has bluetooth, take a look at these products. I installed one on my 2007 (super easy, instructions included) and it works flawlessy. I can now stream music to my stock head unit through bluetooth from my phone and now have bluetooth phone call capability - http://gromaudio.com/store/all-maz.html

I was looking at Bluetooth stereos. You can search Google for Android Friendly car stereos. JVC makes a few.
Since I don't have the money for a new Bluetooth/USB/Aux input capable stereo right now, I'm going to add the aux port in the thread above.

I've made an audio cable with a switch and a microphone in it (like the earbuds with switches and microphones) so I can talk on the phone and control my music without looking at the phone while driving. A simple pressing of the button on the cable can stop, start, skip, backup the song, and increase or decrease volume without having to look at the phone.

I'm currently using a Bluetooth/FM transmitter, but don't think that the sound quality is that great. Was hoping the audio cable will be better quality than the bluetooth-to-FM transmitter.

Anything is better than using any kind of FM transmitter. Strictly bluetooth without the FM transmitter would also be much better audio quality.

I just did the AuxMod on my 2006 and it works fine. Much better than an FM transmitter (I've tried several). Very easy to take the dash apart if you find some good pics/instructions. It was so easy that I'm thinking about getting a trim kit and double-DIN stereo, but I'm spending on suspension upgrade at the moment. If you do the Aux-Mod or some other DIY option and plan to power your MP3 player off the car's 12v lighter socket, I recommend getting a ground-loop isolator or you may find the electrical noise unbearable. YMMV
