From a recent "new guy wants advice on mods" thread:
You are absolutely correct. But it strikes me that if there are 3 of these threads every week, maybe it would be super-helpful if someone with in depth knowledge of the MS3 would take the time to write up a beginner's FAQ. (Is there already a general FAQ, and I haven't noticed it?)
I'd break it down into:
Facts & stats: Basically an MS3 stat sheet. Everything from curb weight to stock wheel size & offset, to fuel capacity, part #'s for oil & air filters, etc.
Abbreviations: All of the common abbreviations, whether it be for parts (TMIC, BPV/BOV) or vendors (PG, TWM) or mechanical (MAF, A/F,)
List of the most common mods, or what the Supraforums guys call "BPU." (Basic Power Upgrades) In fact, they break it down to BPU, BPU+ and BPU++. There are slight variations in the BPU, BPU+, and BPU++ setups, but they are basic guidelines for the tried & true, tested & proven upgrade paths.
And then make it a sticky. Then every time a new guy wants that info, just drop in the link into their thread. Bingo! Everybody's happy.
I have a decent knowledge of general tuning and turbocharger systems, but am still learning the specifics & quirks of the MS3, so I wouldn't be the right guy to tackle it. I'd love to do it, and have the time, but not the knowledge.
Asking the new guys to use the forum search function isn't a very helpful response. Not saying that you can't find the info you need, but when you're new to a foum like this, it can take hours & hours, reading dozens of threads with hundreds of posts before you find the info you need. Meanwhile, there are 4 different people reading the boards at that moment who could answer your questions in 5 minutes if they wanted to.
Seems like an FAQ would be a nice welcome mat for the new guys (and gals).
If nobody here wants to do it, I'll be happy to collect as much info as I can & post it up as an FAQ, and attempt to keep filling in the holes as I can.
Geesh... Everyone is tired of these kinds of threads or what? Read up poster... There are more than 1,000 of these exact kinds of threads with all the answers you are looking for.
