hey all, i might be in the market for a P5 soon
i've had a lot of questions answered by surfing the past posts, but i wanted to start a fresh thread just asking straight up, what would be the best [and hopefully most inexpensive] mods to do!

could i get some opinions on what would be the best perfomance mods and what could bring in the most hp??
ive been driving a mustang for the past year and dont wanna go into power withdrawls!!!
thanks for the time and sorry if im asking some pretty nob questions!

if your coming from a mustang. The P5 is the polar opposite when it comes to HP/$. meaning unless you go turbo its gonna be like pulling teeth to eek and power out N/A. Handling is where the Protege/P5 strives.

ive been trying to find a nice balance between power and mpg, which is a joke really.

im just curious as to numbers id be getting out of small mods like CAI and exhaust, etc. and what it would really take to get up around 200hp.

turbos the only way to get 200... cai and exhast...maybe 10hp and thats a full header back exhaust...So about 800 bucks

i have a cold air intake, header, mid-pipe with a high flow cat and a cat back exhaust. i wanna guess thats good for 15-20whp...maybe. but i am raking in 33+mpg in cold weather! figure closer to 35-36 in the summer.

After a few years of modifying I finally gave up being naturally aspirated with the protege. In order to get 150whp most have gone through complete engine builds: porting/polishing, vtcs removal of intake mani, intake, header, exhaust, udp, cams, cam gears engine management etc. I finally gave up and just finished getting everything together for my turbo project. Save yourself the money by just going ahead and turboing if you have the knowledge and time.

If you decide to go ahead and get the protege and go the naturally aspirated route you can still have fun with the car. With intake, header, exhaust, ported intake mani/vtcs removed and suspension mods I had a blast with my car as a daily driver and being reliable. So there is still fun to be had either or, haha.

150 is not much at all and I do agree the handling and the looks ar the best thing about this car as far as i know.

I know 150 is not much at all. Especially when most look at that amount of power versus how much money individuals put out in order to receive this type of power. I believe those who have gotten this close to this type of power naturally aspirated are true enthusiasts for not giving up.

I made a PVC intake for my 95 protege for under 40 bucks and that included the spectre filter :P Spray paint it black and no one will know.

But seriously as everyone has said, a P5 is for turning and stopping (except in the snow as i recently found out) not for balls out speed and acceleration.

As Iurked this board, i thought i read about someone who got up to 170HP but dropped over $10K. Good luck!

Here I should have linked this.

This will give you an idea of what is needed. Mind you will need a turbo kit and if you get any power you'll want to upgrade to an LSD. But the P5 doesn't weigh much more then the MSP. Spend between 5-7k and you'll have a pretty quick car that will out handle most cars.
