So this thread is for us Auto Guys! We may not have been blessed or even chosen a Manual Protege but we still love our cars and still have the passion to Speed in MazdaSpeed.......

that was lame... if you can think of one better, do so...

so i've done a lot of research with this transmission and will post up codes and details about it when i find the files...

i've also modded my whole car so i, and hopefully other people, can tell you what they have felt with their mods...

so people... let's ask away some questions and show others they shouldnt count us out!(nana)

Alright so I'm wondering what my quarter time should be with an OBX header, catback, high flow midpipe catted and microtech?

Go to the track and find out. As much as I dislike drag racing, it does take some skill to do it right and be fast about it.

I will definitely take it to the track once those mods are installed. Until then, I'll just cower down and accept my slowness. lol

i ran 17.2 with CAI 4-3-1 Header back 2.25" on balding tires...

*edit: 4-2-1 Header... not 4-3-1... how unefficient..*

perfect reaction time 0.04

2.6 60"

trap speed... 80mph

this was also with the big exhaust leak... i'm sure i'd break 16's with new tires, and the sealed exhaust leak

another note... it was on a NHRA track...
Gainesville Raceway is all asphalt except the launch pad and slightly inclines... i'd break 16s at Cecil SGMP, a non-NHRA track

i'm glad this was brought out.... Lentech has transmission upgrades for us... some members here have bought stuff from lentech, such as the valave body mostly...

the valve body:
makes the tranny shift faster
doesnt cause as much delay in between shifts
causes less power loss in between gears

i wish i had this mod, but am saving up for the Street Terminator

I also reccomend, even if youre not upgrading the tranny, is a Tranny cooler... definitely keeps the transmission cooler under the weather and a lot of shifting

Hayden makes them and they are fairly cheap... around $50 - $60
i see that Tom03es has this in his mod list... perhaps he can enlighten us about the installation, for i did not do the installation

Cool thread!!

I got me a ST TC

subbin cause i'm auto!

haha where's bazookajoe? xP

right?

Bazooka Joe DIY'd the valve bodies

I def want a oil cooler and relocate in addition to the tranny cooler
am i going overboard? certainly

i might be too scared to do the DIY... but i bet it'd be a money saver... a shop said they will swap out the whole thing to the ST... that should be somewhat easier to do than a AT -> MT swap i suppose

Crazee D- enlighten us about this Torque Converter... pros? cons? installation? chick magnet? hahaha

we'll see who blows our motor first because of a mishift caused by human error... the new EVO X MR are Auto...

some of us prolly didnt have a choice in the matter... would i pick a manual P5 over an auto P5 if i were to go back in time? yes... but that wasnt an option for me then...

i know that when my mileage gets too high on the motor, i'll just swap to a KL-ZE motor and its 5speed LSD tranny... but that's about 60 - 100k miles from now... until then... this auto will suffice and one day prevail!!!

I too did not have a choice in the matter and will eventually make this thing scream. It will become my project car eventually and you know what I'm thinkin? I may just drop an LS-1 in that b****. lol jk but it will eventually be the project car for sure.

Yes, an additional fluid cooler is a must have. The Hayden cooler seems to work OK. Right now, I'm seeing a 30*F change in temps between fluid out and fluid in to the transmission. I think I may try swapping the order in which the coolers are plumbed. I think I screwed up the order and put the Hayden cooler first inline and then the radiator cooler. I think the radiator is warming the fluid back up too much.

I just got my Lentech ST VB earlier this week. Install looks pretty straight forward and easy. Plus this coincides with my 60,000 mile transmission service.

I too would rather have an manual gearbox- but even those aren't without their problems in Proteges, although they only seem to have problems with high amounts of boost.

maybe take pix of the cooler? and manybe a bfore and after video when u get the valve body installed (o.0)

i'm sure that will be greatly appreciated among us

im eventually going to put everything on the first post when we get enough information so it's all in one post instead of searching for it in the future and reading every post...

Subbin for further info.

My automatic could really use upgrades. Just a question. What tranny fluid should I purchase and how often do you change it? I know right now I have two leaks. A slight oil drop (black) that builds up as a dot on the ground after having my car sit for a few days. The other leak is brownish fluid right under the tranny.

I'll try to do a before and after video.

Here's some pics of my temp sendors for my transmission temp gauge:

My wiring is certainly not the greatest here.

And here is the cooler installed:

The above pics were taken before the the temp sendors were installed. The one pic with only 3 attachments- that's because getting to that 4th was just too difficult without removing more "stuff" and the cooler appeared to be sufficiently secured.
