Hey guys, i wanted to treat my car to a lil something something. Make it a little more unique.

I saw a couple of cars with some black on their hood, and i thought it would look really nice on my silver P5

Now i dont know if it was painted on, or some kind of Vinyl was used, i'm hoping it's the latter.

Does anyone know where i can get this?

p.s. this was only done with MS Paint, and if i used your car as a picture, i hope you dont mind!

Thanks
Joey

Painting is going to be the only way it looks good. I have never heard of that being a vinyl overlay. Cause if you do this you are going want it to have a clear coat over it and no lines in it where the black meets the silver. IMO

I've never seen a vinyl overlay that looked good after some time in the elements. Being that you are from Montreal, I would suggest that you do it right and get it painted. Between your brutal winters and hot, sunny summers I don't think it would hold up.

I also think that the black center on the silver hood would look really good.

I agree with the previous guys. Painting it for this would be best. If it were simply a stripe you could go with a vinyl, but its too large. Plus painting will last longer. My P5 has a stripe down the center of the whole car that is vinyl...it is all faded where the sun hits it. Where the sun can't hit it that well it is in decent shape. I will have to get it redone or something because I fear the paint underneath the vinyl will be a different shade than the uncovered paint.

But yeah, get it painted, it will look nicer. After a long time the vinyl cracks too and looks bad. Paint won't do that.

Thanks for your imput.
I'd REALLY like to get this done to my car sometime real soon.
Any idea what the cost of something like this would be?
i know it plays from paint shop to paint shop, but what should i expect?

Ditto on the paint, that's just too large to do in vinyl. It might end up in your face on the freeway on the windshield, blow away & lose it or as was said fall victim to elements. Somebody could just walk up & peel it off too if they snapped that it was vinyl. All bad things.

I don't know too much about painting costs, but you could probably decrease costs by bringing in the hood seperately so that they do not have to remove it themselves (labor costs). I wouldn't pay more than $200 for this. And that sounds about fair to me. I guess it just depends on the skill required...which doesn't appear to be very high

Paint the roof black too and maybe parts of the hatch door...Black rims and b/o headlights...Filthy

I assume he means filthy in the same way you'd say something looked sick. It's a good thing.

plus I agree with him 100%.

Well I have a friend who works at a local tint shop in my area. And we are going to do this with vinyl. The way I see it is vinyl is not permanent and can always come off. If I decide I like it. Then I will have it painted on. But this way I wont have something permanent on my car and decide I dont really like it when its too late. That is a big space to cover with vinyl though.

Carbon fiber with the sides painted.

i was thinking of painting the top too but i wasn't sure if that was going too far. Would it look stupid if i painted only the hood and the top of the car and not the hatch? (peep)

In my opinion the car would look really good with a painted hood, but if you start painting more if it there is a risk of having it look like you had to buy some parts from a wrecker to replace damaged sections. To me painting the hood works because there are defined ridges to use as guides, for both the paint and your eye. The roof might look alright, there isn't as much of a border (well, except for the channel where a rack would hook up to), but the hatch becomes an all or none job. I myself would consider painting the hood, but not the roof or hatch. To me at least, the hood has defined, clear edges in all 4 directions, while the roof doesn't really have one at the back, and the hatch doesn't at all.

Remember, it is a lot easier to paint more if you decide to at a later point than trying to match the sun faded colour if you decide that a black roof doesn't look good.
