It sort of makes sense to me. Say you take a trip into space...It isn't really a perfect vacuum. There are particles spaced about 1cm away from eachother. I could see a part of space that is so vast and completely void of matter. Size is all relative and even if something is billions of millions of light years wide that is still a small dot on the map of the universe.
do you usually put in inside unknown holes?

Can someone show me 6 billion trillion in digits so I can get a good idea of what that much of nothing looks like?
This does bring up an interesting point. In my HS yearbook, my ambition was to (as cheesy as it might sound) "unlock the mysteries of the universe." Back then I wanted to be an astrophysicist. (I was smokin some good dope back in those days.) Sadly, I doubt I or anyone else in our lifetimes will even make a dent, but discoveries like this are a step (in a race about as long as our solar system is wide) in the right direction.
Whether I'm thinking about how life began or... how to create a powerpoint for work, I always like to break thing down to their simplest terms. It's virtually impossible (minus the virtually) to think of just how vast the universe is. Unless there's another dimension that our intellect cannot grasp, it's undoubtedly limitless... or, an infinite 'size'. But here's the thing... when you take out all the 'stuff'... you know, the planets, the stars, the space dust... all the crap. you've got... nothing. that blackness up in the sky tonight? nothing. Nothing never had to be created because nothing is nothing. Once that makes sense, things are at least somewhat easier to grasp.
Assuming the big bang theory is correct.... the universe has been expanding exponentially ever since. Expanding into the vastness of 'nothing'. It's like dropping a chlorine tablet into a swimming pool. It'll start out all bunched together then eventually spread further and further apart. There will be some areas where (due to various factors) there will be less powder. This empty void the article refers to is really no different. just... on a slightly grander scale.
How this information can help us and what it all means... well, that much is up for debate. At the least though, it's interesting and thought provoking.
If anyone has any (sensible) thoughts on how the big bang occured... I'm all ears. If I think too hard about this, my brain freezes up on me and I'm forced to reboot into safe mode.

Regardless on your belief (or non-belief) in Divinity, this is pretty amazing stuff.
I'm a grown woman now and I still get the same feeling as when I was a little girl laying out on the grass looking up into the vast blackness of night filled with the twinklings of stars and planets so far away...awe inspiring and thought provoking for sure!
