High pitch squeal in cold weather

I drive a 2008 MS3 GT with a little over 10K miles on it. Twice I've noticed a high pitch squeal coming from under the hood, or at least the front of the car. When I would try to pull over and get a better idea of what was going on, the noise would stop. The two occasions were a few weeks apart and each time lasted for about 30-45 seconds. Both times were in very cold weather (below freezing, about 25 degrees Fahrenheit) and shortly after the car was turned on. The pitch and intensity of the squeal did not change with acceleration, shifting or breaking. The pitch didn't sound exactly like a fan belt but rather a more constant higher sound, like metal scraping metal. I am planning on taking the car into my dealer to have it checked out, but I'd like to have a better idea of what might be going on.
