Hey hey! Nub looking for P5

Hey, so Dave here. I've been lurking here and there for a while, but like crazy the past week. No, I don't have any pics of my P5 to show you all. Mostly because I don't have one...yet. I basically have been looking into getting a P5 for about a year. And well, I'm in love. No other car will do. I don't plan on having the money to dump into fixing it up, but darn if I don't want to lol


So, I just wanted to say hello, since I'll be around a bit. I'm actually just waiting to sell my Wrangler, then I'm gonna jump into a Protege as soon as I can. I may be working out a deal for the Jeep this week, so I was checking out some P5's for sale, and just wanted to know what your thoughts are on this guy. I honestly would rather get an auto tranny, 'cause I'm a bit worn out with stick, but I can go either way. And I don't really want to get something so close to 100k. Be I would like your ideas and experiences with buying.

From first impressions: it's missing the upper grille trim and emblem (obviously), the fusebox cover by the dead pedal, it looks like something is wrong with the passenger's side foglight and that's not the stock shift knob. How much are the asking? I would almost certainly get a Carfax report and to be honest I wouldn't pay more than $5000 for that thing in its current condition.

Their asking $6,290. I noticed a few things you mentioned (missing the upper grille trim and emblem). Looks like a skip eh? It's pretty hard finding one for less than 7 that looks worth my time (it at least in my area Long Island). But the hunt continues...

I would go to them and mention the obvious defficiencies and mileage (for instance, my '02 only has ~65k miles). Also, if the Carfax report shows anything interesting you might be able to bring down the price even more. Either way, you'd really have to inspect the car in person to make an educated decision.

FWIW, I love how they say the car is in great condition and is well maintained when it's obviously missing parts, LOL.

haha I appreciate your help, because I honestly haven't got an idea as to what to look for. I have friends and fam that would come along when I check out a car, but their busy enough and don't wanna waste their time.

Dealers about 40 mins away, so I may hold off on looking at it in person for now. Besides, I gotta wait and see what happens to my current baby.

I did see an awesome, 02 2.5 for 7,500. Only had 49k. I think they sold it tho

Other than what's been pointed out it looks like pretty clean car. I would check out the car fax on it and see what comes up. Your headed in the right direction though!

A tip from a dealer, to help you negotiate: have cash. Or bank approval, or gold coins, whatever you plan on paying with, in hand when you decide to haggle.

I think you could find a nicer one, and also, don't rely purely on carfax. Look for VIN tags in the body and door panels, those should all be present and accounted for. If joe schmo previous owner had a friend in the auto body business, or payed out of pocket for an accident without reporting it to his insurance, carfax will never know.

Hey Spartacus, I'm a fellow Long Islander and I had some trouble finding a car locally also. Personally, I would not buy a car from Brooklyn or Queens. It probably had a hard life with those roads & traffic. After looking for a few weeks, I found a mint car in nearby Pennsylvania for 6200.00. It was much cleaner and cheaper than anything I found around here. I have had my car since March & I love it. I got a 5 spd and put a B&M shifter in right away. It's a pleasure to drive. Good luck looking and don't settle for someone else's headache.

Brooklyn streets are the worst HAHA i lived there for 2 years, glad i'm back in AZ with our nice roads lol I would have to say ditto to raserx, it would be best to look in other areas than NYC
