Hesitation with my New MS6

Hi Guys,

I have a stock 2007 MS6 with about 2700 miles on it and I had a weird thing happen today. I had just filled up my gas with 93 octane (as always), and it was about 50F outside. I was accelerating moderately and shifting from 4th to 5th at about 3500 rpm and my engine hesitated badly. I heard some rapid ticks from what sounded like the right (passenger) side of the dash and the car lurched forward instead of accelerating. I definitely hit 5th and not 3rd because the engine rpm's went way down, not up. I let off the gas and shifted back into 4th and everything was fine. This is the second time this has happened in the two months I have owned the car. I have no CEL's and when I took the car in for an oil change at 2500 miles I had the dealer check the rear diff bolts. I also had all the recalls done on this car (reflash, etc.) before I bought it.

Does anyone have any idea what this was? Should I be worried?

Also does anyone get more than 20mpg with these cars? I can't seem to break 20mpg, even doing only highway driving. Usually I get about 18mpg. I don't drive like a racer... except on the track ;)

THere are countless threads on this subject. You are feeling the same hesitation the most of us have at about 2800 rpm. I don't think anyone has it figured out but there are many ideas. Search for stuttering/hesitation and you should get all the info you need

I have read the threads on hesitation, but most of them don't mention any associated noise. I did find one thread where someone was getting a clicking sound like me. In that thread they mention the purge valve as a possible culprit, but there was no follow up to confirm that diagnosis. The posters in the other hesitation threads also seem to have the problem more frequently than me. So far it has only happened twice in two months (knock on wood).

Do you think I should take it to the dealer and have them check the purge valve?

You have a stock airbox I assume? Just humor me and check to make sure its tight and the clips are on.. It could be a backfire b/c your exhaust is on the right.. I could hear a noise when this happened but I always associated it to a fuel cut due to ems running @17 psi. The noise was louder on the left for me on the intake side. My solution was to use a lower gear /less torque and forget about mazda's flaw.. The car is sexy, quick, & agile think happy..

Yeah, I just checked and the clips are tight and the seal around the box is good. Thanks for the suggestion though. Are there any relays or solenoids in the dash on the right side that affect the engine? The clicking sounded a lot like a relay to me...

i have only felt hesitation twice in my car, once was in 5th gear at about 2800 rpm and the other was in 6th at 3000 rpm. thats the only time and i didn't hear any noise.

you know mine used to do it pretty bad before the reflash. It still does but not as bad. When I am on the car pretty hard in first then shift to second, there is a little hesitation and a slight hickup then the power comes on...

I think that it could be the electronic throttle not opening fast enough or getting confused. I don't know. But it isn't what I think the car should do. I have driven many turbo cars and know what lag feels like. this isn't lag. I am going to have the dealer look at mine again as well......

By the way I am getting 24 MPG on long highway trips but on average I get 19-21 period. Mix of city and highway.

That slight "hickup" and hesitation is actually the DCS/TCS if you still have that enabled, and even with it off, there is still a slight hickup because under full power, the car will start to send more power to the rear wheels to avoid torque-steer. That power being transferred causes the hickup because it is an instantaneous more load on the engine (trying to drive 4 wheels instead of 2).

Under moderate power, like the original post, I do not know what that is. Especially not if its making a sound.

this sounds a lot like my issue. It's been ongoing for months, the dealer doesn't have a f'n clue as to where to start.

Most of the time, it has happened to me going up hill. I accelerate suddenly, maybe to pass a car, and the engine just dies, I'll hear a ticking noise or a knocking noise coming from the right front area of the car. It's happened at any speed from 50 kph to 120 kph. Naturally, the second it happens you lift off the gas, but as soon as I hit the gas again she's fine. My car was flashed all up to date as of dec 07, i had the recall done hoping it would solve the issue but in this past week I've felt it again. Talking to a Mazda rep off the record, he says to get the upper fuel pump checked, check it's psi, so that is my next step.

I've heard others with the same issue, engine coil, bad gas, plugs, all have been considered as possibilites but there seems to be no certain answer.

My mileage since Dec has also been horrendous. GEtting 300kms per tank. But, we have had one heck of a winter so far so that could be the culprit. That being said, winter time last year, I was getting 400/tank in city.
