Hesitation when accelerating from a stand still

Nope..... a couple of my valve disks came completely off and were sitting in my manifold. One had went into the cylinder a bit and the piston took a bite out of it. It looked like some one had taken a bite out of a cookie....

Luckily the piston and cylinder were OK because it just flew right through and out my exhaust without bouncing around. It did hit the spark plug which caused problems but that was an easy fix. The shop just deVICS the whole manifold.

valve disks? WTF are you talking about? I think what you're talking about is the butterfly flap. If a valve fell out, you'd have WAY bigger issues lol

Haha I may be using the wrong term. It was the metal disk that actually did the opening and closing that came off on mine. What the screws held on. The bronze pieces that are about the size of a silver dollar.

yeah, gotcha. That's the butterfly flaps, not the valve hahaha. No worries :)

Only if the porblem started after the last tune up ('all maint up to date') would i suspect the plugs. Pull them and inspect - but i would suspect a bad coil at this point.

I looked again - no - plugs were nto checked/cleaned in the orignal post. So, yes, this is where you should start. (my bad)

EGR would have it idling rough - i didn't see that in the OP. The MAF? Unless he has over-oiled a filter - it should not get dirty/require maintenance...

So that is why i say clogged injectors or bad coil. Probbaly injectors becasue it is only a problem off the line. Bad coil would be all over the RPM range.

All your vac lines ok and no leaks? this has cause my car to bog at low rpm but it was more of a surging because i think the ecu didn't know what was going on. Some times people think it's the injectors when it's as simple as Vac lines leaking. And sorry to say they are the easiest thing for an underhanded mechanic to pull off or cut to receive return business and charge more $$ And def. spark plugs!!!

Check your throttle body. Mine was gummed up causing the flap to stick resulting in poor acceleration from stand still.

I honestly have no idea if there are any vac line leaks and I don't know how to go about checking for it. As mentioned in my OP, I get a slight hesitation or "bogging down" when accelerating from a stop. However, this is completely random and does not happen every time.

The car idles very smoothly so no problem there. The problem is definitely not all over the RPM range. It only happens when accelerating from a stop, and it doesn't happen every time. It probably happens every 1 out of 3 times.

Ok, I haven't had much time to work on this problem but today while changing the oil in the car I decided I would clean the MAF as well. I took it off and it looked perfectly clean. I had already purchased the cleaner, so I decided to spray the MAF anyway. I hooked it all back up and took it for a drive. The car didn't hesitate or bog down at all when I accelerated from a stop (which was the problem I was having) for about the first hour or so of driving around today. But then, it started doing it again, and did maybe three or four times in total. I would say out of maybe 50 "stop and go's" at various traffic lights and stop signs, it did it about four times as I mentioned. I guess my next move is to replace the plugs and wires, but I really don't think that is going to help the problem either. This hesitation or "bogging down" when accelerating from a stop is totally random, and definitely doesn't happen all the time. If you guys have any more ideas, I'm willing to listen.

all service up to date....belts, plugs, coils?

No, I'm pretty sure I mentioned that. I bought the car from a local Mazda dealer with 50k Miles. I don't know what if any maintenance the dealer did if any. The car now has 88.5k miles on it, and the only things I've done are oil changes, air filter changes, and I replaced the fuel filter sock thing as a very first attempt at correcting this problem. Today, I changed the oil again, as well as the air filter, and I cleaned the MAF.

My next step is to replace the plugs and wires, and will hopefully get to that next weekend. Do I really have to do the coils as well? I know I'm also due for a timing belt and water pump change as well, and I'll get estimates on that soon too.

Have you fixed this problem yet I tend to be having some of your same issues and I am lost on what it could be but to break it down more mine starts hesitating after I get to half a tank of gas . it does drive fine but from a stand still if I try to accelerate to get infront of traffic it will bogg down and when going down any road if I try to pass anyone it will bogg down and then pick up speed but like I said it only happens when less than half a tank.
