HELP!!!! SPool Springs making noise

No I am not saying anything is wrong with spool. I installed my springs this weekend and now I am getting like a popping sound from the rear. Kinda like metal on metal jiggling around. Every bolt is tightened and torqued to spec so I am kinda stumped. talked to a few people and they all suggested that the springs are not seated right. Well I seated them the only way that they could go. The large part of the spring at the bottom so that it meets up with the little stopper in the channel and the smaller part of the spring at the top with the top oriented so that it matches up with the strut mounting holes. One guy said that it may just be because the springs are new and they are settling and breaking in????? Not sure if I buy that one. Well let me know what you guys think. I am going to recheck them tonight but would like some feedback before I do. BTW the car handles and drives great but I get that popping noise when going over seams and road imperfections. happens more at slower speeds and going in and out of driveways and parking lots.

Anbody????? 7 views but no responses. Somebody please chime in on here and let me know whats going on. I feel like I am driving an Mp3 with the clunk. j/k kidding guys but seriously this can't be good for the car and it is driving me up the wall.

is it only happening during low speeds while braking?

try lubing up the sway bar bushings.

Now theres an idea. Since I did have problems with the sway bar nut and I am now using steel nuts instead of brass. and the majority of the noise is coming from the side I had problems with. Will check tonight and break out the old white lithium grease. Thanks for the idea.

maybe the 2inch drop the spoolin springs give was too much stress on the shocks and maybe a shock went out/blew out or something. I just posted something earlier asking about replacing shocks when installing springs and i was told that it is a good idea to do so, otherwise your shocks can go out. not an expert here, i could be wrong.... i'm still kinda confused about the whole replacing shocks thing while lowering your car, just the fact that i know a lot of people who have lowered there cars and not replaced their shocks and their cars drive fine and the shocks are fine. but then again i've seen some lowered cars with blown out shocks that ride like $hit and look like $hit.

well thanks for the advice but I highly doubt that the strut is blown. The car only has 10K on it and I just installed the springs this past weekend. I highly doubt that I would have blown a strut in 1 day. If I did then it will just give me an excuse to get the mazdaspeeds and a bigger rear sawybar.

Normally the spring rate must match (or be close) to what the shock can handle. Otherwise the shock will do all the job and fail sooner than expected.

Im not an expert either but when we droped my friend's Prelude, he had something similar to what u described and we found out that it was the coil getting off-centered when we were lowering the car to remove the jack. We ended up solving the problem by manully holding the coil centered on the chuck untill it teh weight of the car hold the coil in place.

Their were coilovers tho.

Look at your shock, was it rubbed?

hehe, thx. let me know if it works. i've got the same problem and i forgot to pick up some lithium grease at the auto parts store today. got $25 worth of cleaning supplies and no grease... (argh) (hand)

Well I think I have it fixed. The sway bar endlink nuts were loose. It wasn't the srpings after all. I torqued them down and used soem locktite and alot of white lithium grease on all the bushings and stuff. Took it fot a drive last night and it seemed fixed so we will just have to see. Still a little noise but our cars are noisey so I am righting it off as that. Will let you know if I hear it more while driving.

maybe i am the only one who caught this but i have done many many spring jobs and actually finished another at 4:00am this morning on the 2nd eclipse project i have and I have never known the large end of the spring to be at the bottom .. they always go at the top ... and maybe the Mp5 is differant (never really looked at this point) but after 10 cars currently i have done I have never seen it done that way before .. that could be a major problem but if it was backwards I dont see how they would fit together ...

just remember.. anytime you alter the suspension you will get a little noise.. i dropped mine on 1.5 in h&rs and i get a lil creak every now ang again.. i dont really know what it is.. dont really care -=)
im glad u like the spool springs.. i think im going to go to some spool springs too maybe later int he summer.. my drop just is a lil too high for me. -=)
PS.. get any leds yet?
John

The large part of the spring does go at the bottom. I too had some clunky sound in the back, but torqued sway bar end links and some grease did the job. Took my P5 on the interstate today for about a 150 mile road trip...damn these springs ride awesome. Later:)

thanks for all of the help guys. Still don't have any noise after the fix. I love when problems are fixed easily. As for how I like them, I DON't ......I LOVE THEM! Made the biggest difference yet to my car. I thought it handled better before but this is just awesome for just some springs. Can't wait for the MS struts and sway bar later this year.

Pfizz, unfortunately No the LEDS are still on their way. Hong Kong to NC takes about 2 weeks from what I have been told. I am expecting them here this week though. Have everything else ready to go. Even got all of the parts to make my jigs for making the kits. All I need now are the LEDs and Resistors and a full day to work on them and they will be done. Got my eyelids in on Monday and they cover what I expected them to so no changes to my previous plans. Will let you know the day they come in.

Bump.

FuNwaGoN, I installed mine today (actually, somebody helped me out who was more knowledgeable than I). Anyhow, my rear(s) (mainly right side) are making a popping/rattling noise over small bumps at lower speeds. I know its not the springs, but probably the install, as this was the last one in and we probably got lazy :).

All the bolts seem tight with the car on the ground. Will I notice that the swaybar bolt is loose when I jack up the rear? Any help would be appreciated.

Chris

Fixed! As expected, after jacking the rear up, the right swaybar endlink bolt was able to be removed by hand! Lots of noise. However, just to be safe my coworker and I decided to redo the rear springs and make sure they were seated properly. The right rear was definitely not in the rubber track properly. Glad this was caught before any damage might have occurred.

I am now lowered with spool springs. I've driven about 20 miles on them and will be going in for an alignment on Tuesday. I love them now. No noise, ride just like stock, and they look trick.

I'll have pics on my car when I take my winter wheels out of the back to aid in the settling of the back.

Woohoo :D.

Chris
