help - questions about bad performance - bad dealer

Hey,

I've had some of the recurring problems with hesitations and sluggish throttle response on the highway. After bringing my car to the dealer several times for this and big puffs of black/grey smoke when accellerating at highway speeds 70mph in 6th, they couldn't find any problem. Then after the 3rd or 4th time I bring it in I get a call....

"Sir, we think we've figured out your problem. We have a regional Mazda rep here and we think the blow off valve is leaking. So bring your car in next week and we'll give you a loaner while we look at that issue and perform the swirl valve and computer reprogram."

So I show up a week later and the service rep is gone and no one knows a thing about my last call or having a loaner for me. I'm ticked off, but let the fresh hire (teenage girl) write up the recall which they promise to do in less than an hour.

I get the car back and it's running real bad from 3-4.5k rpm, but seems to pick up well after that. Real bad turbo lag type sensation until around 4.5k. I decide to give up on that dealer and go 30 miles out of my way to another dealer. So tonight I open the hood to check the oil before I go to the new dealer tomorrow and guess what? The air box isn't clamped shut it's cracked open about 1/2 inch.

Now I'm not positive, but after closing the box back up and taking it for a test drive the low end torque feels much better, but it's also only 55 degrees out tonight, so that could be the improvement too.

If you've read this far, here's my question. Can the box being open a bit kill low end torque badly? It would make sense to me that it does based on my experience with long and short RAM CAI on NA cars, but I'm not sure about a turbo.

Also, does the new tune improve the fall off of power after 5k rpm or is there something else going on? My car is either still low on power down low or it's improved a bit on the top end.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Regards,

Dave
