Hey all, i just got done posting regarding the Jet Chip posting below. I am looking for a chip upgrade for my P5. Does ANYONE know where I can obtain one? The motor is new, so it may not be out yet. But usually after one full year of production (which the P5 with 2.0 will reach in about 3 months) someone starts to make a chip. If anyone knows of a company already manufacturing, let me (and all of us) know. Thanks,
Brook Mumford

Just to let you know its not a new motor. Its the same 2.0 thats been put in the 626's since the late 70's. Yes, you can use the jet chip from the 626.

Don't believe the hype. What mods do you have? Even if you had an intake, exhaust and header it would not show any significant gains (I estimate). Chip upgrades usually are expensive and the hp per dollar ratio is really bad. Also your dealing with a small 4 cylinder engine...unless your going to go all out on the head and increase compression etc or forced induction, then it may not be worth it.

What do you guys think?

From my experience, chips should be the LAST mod done. Plus they only really provide anything significant when you have done engine milling work. After porting and relieving, maybe some cams, pistons, forced induction(if you go that route), complete exhaust system, electronics~~then a chip may add almost 5 hp. Those gains are possible because the engine is modded, and the chip is exploiting the modifications. A chip in a stock car, especially a 4cyl. may make the engine run a little cooler, but the fan will be kicking on and off more frequently. That's about it.

Chips will make an improvement if you experience any lag, where the fuel seems to fall on its face usually during WOT. The chip will correct that problem. However, I have not experienced any significant lagging during acceleration. The induction system, and dual coils really do a good job at delivering and igniting the gas.

I installed a chip in my truck after most of my mods were completed, and could tell no difference whatsoever. I bought the hypertech chip with a low temp thermostat.(I think jet recommends that you get one of these as well) Without having any real signifigant mods, I wouldn't get one.
Just my 2 cents. :)

About the only time you really feel any difference with a chip is on automatic transmition cars that have computer controll of the tranny. The chip can firm up the shifting. Other than that they are pretty mucha waste unless you have one specifically tuned for the modifications done to your car.

Dont u have to have/buy additional mods to support the chip? For chips to be so expensive i would think that they would make a significant difference in performance/HP. Who's suppose to make them anyway,..Mazdaspeed? :D

You DON'T HAVE to have any other mods to use a chip. The idea behind chips is that they change the fuel and timing maps to get better performance. There are some BIG gains to be had here. The reason they don't go overboard with these is because you really need to put your car on a dyno to determine the best maps for your particular car.

Another problem with some of these chip companies is that they are NOT changing anything at all. They just sell you a product that's exactly the same thing that you had before, so you have to be careful when ordering these things
