The idea isn't to charge the battery (though in theory I think you could) but to provide enough current to power the systems which would allow you to use the fob to unlock the doors. Then you can get the hood open. I haven't done it myself but it should be possible. But given that you should get a key made anyway, it's best to just go that route.

I didn't. I jacked the car up and took off the lower cover. I tried to charge the battery via the starter connection but it didn't work for me. The local service shop has something they think can unlock it. I guess I'll know tomorrow morning.

I got the started and moved. A guy from the local garage got it open for me. The battery was actually shorted or near shorted. I think applying voltage to the + starter lug would have worked if the battery was just dead and not shorted.
