HELP DESPERATE!!! Computer Gurus

the thing that sucks is, i lost my cd with windows xp on it. so if i have to redo it again, ill have to download a copy from kazaa until i can buy another copy.

ok another update: i can do anything with exe files but anything thats not an executable freezes up?

I know you ran msconfig and disabled all the startup programs but did you disable some services as well. Run msconfig, go to services tab, check the box to hide all microsoft services and see what you have left. Uncheck any of the ones you don't think you need then reboot.

tried that, the only one left is cryptkey service, which is related to macromedia Swish and its serial number verification.

ill try it again after i download winblows xp in safe mode, but i really dont think thats the problem.

You're running Kazaa. Hmmm, you've got alot of problems. P2P will be your undoing. Get rid of it.

Take this how you want bro but I can't have any sympathy for you since you've posted the above list of hacked software that you've obtained and offered to sell to people. You can do time for that s*** (U.S. Mail = federal charges)......the least of your worries should be a crashing computer. I for one can't have any sympathy here. My ONLY hope is that this might be a turning point for you and get you out to Best Buy to pick up a legit copy of XP.....that would be a good start. I have a much higher respect for you as a courageous member of our military so here's hoping you continue to set high standards and go legit.....and encourage others to do the same.

DISCLAIMER: if you've reformed since that posting and were running all legit software then please accept my apologies.

I almost don't even need to know what your prob is... SO many of my probs have been fixed with Norton System Works. It has a bunch of utilities that will most likely fix whatever the F your problem is. I'm at the point where I don't even think about trying to isolate the problem myself and figure it out... I just let software do it for me. (the POS utilities that come with Windows can't hold a candle) So anyways... give that a shot.

What's that supposed to mean? What if there are people on this forum who work for one of those software companies? Don't you think your "blah" is a little callous towards those people whose pockets this may be digging into? Think before you post.

Matt, something that I don't think has been posted yet...

You said this problem only happened when you RIGHT clicked it, correct?

How many options are on your right-click menu? Many programs like to add-in programs that can be clicked by right-clicking (aka, WinRAR, VirusScan, etc). Perhaps one of these programs are on your laptop, or an internet shortcut that doesn't exist, etc.

Also, check your send-to and open-with sub menus. I've found that if you have a bunch of crap there, it'll slow down the system as well.

I know that the send-to menu is actually a folder on Windows. As for the others, I'm not too sure...

Good luck!

I was about to recommend the same thing. One of the send to shortcuts may refer to a network location.

Hey you said you wiped out your computer and reloaded everything right?

Did you try it in progression when you re-installed everything?

What I mean by this is.... Wiped your HD, re-loaded XP (clean install... no updates). Did you try it then and see the problem?

I have been stuck on issues like that before where I would have to try something in stages. Load a clean install, then try it. Next load updates (one by one) and try it. Then start loading your applications (one by one) and trying it.

Long way of doing it, but eventually you should find the culprit.
