Help! Blown engine

2000 Protege ES with 1.8 L Automatic @ 102K. Mechanic says we broke rod, cracked block and must replace engine. Oil starved sometime ago? I assume from previous owner. Three questions - Has this been a big issue with this engine? Does anyone know of a good source of used or rebuilt engines (Near NC) and what is a fair market price for the engine and installation?

we have a wide array of used engines. i wouldn't say its all too common for the rods to simply break, especially if the car is otherwise stock.

Thanks,

Your site noted a 2.0 L engine. I may have the wrong engine size. Does the ES come with the 1.8 or 2.0? Should I call you to discuss options?

I can not think of an instance where an engine has blown from anything other then heavy modding or lack of oil.

Feel lucky bro, our engine went at 55K miles. 100k+ miles I could have dealt with.

the 99 to 00 ES has a 1.8 liter. the 01 to 03 ES has a 2.0 liter. they are near identical engines and the 2.0 will mate to your transmission.

One more questions on droppimg a 2.0L engine to replace a 1.8L. Will all the existing parts from the 1.8L engine that are required and must be put on the 2.0 L used engine work properly ? Water Pump, timing belt, manifolds, sensors, computer etc.
