Kenwood's are cursed I think. I used to swear by them for years and years. I had the kdc-x717 and kdc-x817 burn out on me withing 2 months of each other. Needless to say those weren't cheap back in the day. I had them not even 2 years (aquired the 817 from a friend who got his same time as I got my 717, I took his 817 to replace my 717 after he got an Alpine head). Both the motors that operate the flip around screen stopped wanting to rotate the screen and both frooze in the down position. After that I stopped trusting Kenwood headunits. I then bit the bullet and went Apline 9835, no regrets.
So, in a nut shell. Save yourself the headacheand dump the Kenwood if you're having problems and go with something else. In my opinion ever since Kenwood switched to the "MASK" flip around screens the realability of their product went down the toilet. I only had a screen problem just before my 717 burned out, but I doubt its related to yours.
Note: This is by no means a slander against kenwood and their products. Just a documented incident where I had some bad luck. I have kenwood home audio stuff that has been working for nearly 10 years now and still strongly believe in the name. I just have doubts with their headunits.
