HELP! Accident w/ AUTOEXE

Blue MP3
I was lucky enough to get an early Christmas gift last night ... A ripped off AUTOEXE Lower lip!

I was on my way home from work when I noticed a road crew doing black top on the city street and they were waiving people through a ditch that had been dug to bury a pipe. The ditch had not yet been black topped; only dirt covered the buried pipe.

I was hesitant at first but I figured I would see just how deep it was ... let keep in mind that I have a MP3 with the AUTOEXE lower lip spoiler and lowered 2'' by SPOOL springs, so I'm pretty low (in the front end at least ;))

There was a kid in front of me that had lowered his cavalier and had a loud canister ... as he was clearing the ditch I'm pretty sure his canister scrapped on his way out ... I was next.

I went real slow and they kept waiving me on ... I went in with my front wheels and no scrapping or rubbing or anything, it was not as bad as I thought. Then I noticed that to get out of the ditch it seemed a bit steeper. I put the car in reverse and decided I would find another route. The guy conducting traffic then yells "your fine! Keep going, you got it" I rolled down my window and said "are you sure?" He said yes so I went for it.

Again, I went slow to see if I could hear anything ... seconds later what I heard was "CRUNCH! CRACK! BREAK!" my whole body cringed. I had to at this point go through the ditch and I ended up running over the torn off piece.

I pulled over and kept my cool even though I was pissed off like hell. I walked up to the guy that seemed to be the crew supervisor and the first thing he said to me was to go get a couple of estimates and come back with them. I said I was not able to do that now, it was already 6 PM and it was dark. He said then stop back we will be here for the next couple of days. I asked him who he was and whom he worked for, was he a city worker? County worker? State? Who? He said he was private. I asked him if he was private then why is he working on a city street. He then told me that the city hired him to do the work. At this time I was so upset that I just asked him for his companys info so I could follow up with them in the morning. He wrote down all of his info and game the company name, address and phone. He seemed to be pretty honest and straightforward. I picked up the crushed piece and threw it in the car and bounced.

Here is the problem; I want his company to cut me a check or his insurance to cut me a check because my auto insurance will not cover any aftermarket parts. He does not know that it is not after market, he thinks I ripped off part of my bumper.
I do not want to eat the cost of this because he advised me my car would clear and my gut instincts said to go back.

How can I get this piece replaced and create some form of estimate from a body shop to show actual costs? What can I do to get this taken care of? Please post some ideas, and opinions on my situation. Thanks!

Get two estimates. One to buy the lip, and one to paint and install it. Then bring him both and say that's what it will cost. The insurance company should have no problem with that. That's what I did when my exhaust got bent from being rear-ended. They even gave me two seprate checks so I could go buy an aftermarket exhaust with one check and get the bumper etc. fixed with the other check.

Good chance either his company or the city will just cut you a check for the total estimate of replacement and repair. I knew a guy who got a new set of tires and wheels from IDOT because I-72 buckled badly during the summer and when he went over it he ended up with two flat front tires and two messed up rears. He got estimates. Showed them to IDOT and they matched estimated value with a check. Nice thing about big entities like that. What we consider huge purchases they look at as pigeon feed. Understandable when you think how many millions are spent on road repair every year.

Do you think I will encounter any problems in obtaining the check because this guy is privately owned?

I don't really think so. Of course I am shooting from the hip since I have never personally experienced this. But my thinking is the city won't pay for it because it was the companies dumb ass employee who told you it was clear to go. I would think the company will just want to cut you a check so they don't have to worry about small claims court and all that. Plus they really value those contracts they get from the city so I doubt they would want to do anything to jeapordize that. As long as your estimates aren't through the roof, which I doubt they will be, I would figure they'll look at them and be like ok, here ya go.

You did the right thing by staying cool and getting the info. If you have to deal with that same guy again he'll remember that and it should make things a lot easier than if you jumped out and started screaming about who was gonna pay for this and such. So, good on ya for that, and best of luck with the repairs. Just sorry you have to go through so much trouble to get your car back to the way it already was.

You should have no problems getting a check. I recently had my windshield broken on my truck during a paving job and the state paid for it.

Just get several estimates and send them to the private contractor. If you have no luck with the contractor, send them to the city or local gov't treasury department. They will cut you a check.

ok guys ... I called them ... I spoke with a woman who run the office there and she seemed to be very understanding and all but I'm still wondering if it will work out ok.

I advised her what happened and I advised her I would most likely have 2 separate bills (AUTOEXE and body shop)

She said when I get the estimates to fax them to her. Do you guys think that an email quote for the AUTOEXE will be good enough or should I have them fax something? Thanks for your input!

Get an actual fax, thats what I would do anyway, then show the bodyshop that, they can put in the cost of the lip on the estimate. I work at a body shop. I would fax you an estimate but I live in Arizona.

damn that suck dude.

I have always been hesitant to buy a lip for my car for that reason, the roads around here are to bad.

good luck

yeah, Now I'm torn

I def want to get the autoexe replaced and all but it is pretty low ... should I get diff springs for the whole ride since the spools blow in the rear anyway? eibach maybe?

u will have no problem getting money, i drove over a metal plate in the road and got a flat they paid in full no questions asked after like 2 weeks.

Is this the first time you had problems with the lip being too low? Reason I'm asking is I'm planning on getting that lip soon, and my car is lowered about 2" or so with GC coilovers...I'm sorta worried it will be too low....tell me your experiences up to that horrible one :)

For normall day to day driving you will be just fine ... you basically just have to look where you are driving a bit more carefully. i.e. driveways, bumps, parking lots etc.

After about a month or so of driving it like that you will do it everytime, automatically ... it becomes second nature. I can still clear most speed bumps and I hvae no problem getting around.

occasionally I have to park far away, or on the side of the road to avoid going up a driveway, but its worth it. You will scrape Im sure here and there ... dont worry too much. As long as its not a major scrape or at serious speed you should be ok.

My girlfriend is always saying that I wasted my money on springs and the lowerlip. She does no think any car should be that low and she thinks whatever you drive should without a doubt clear EVERY speedbump, driveway and parking curbs. I think it hilarious! Will she ever understand? Prob not!

Cool, appreciate the insight. I've been wondering how it would hold up on a lowered car.

I assume you had the genuine autoexe urethene lip? I wonder if the fiberglass versions hold up as well....

I do have the AUTOEXE urthane lower lip (well half of it anyway)

Urthane is much better material. The fiberglass is too brittle and would shatter into a million pieces if there is too much pressure or force applied. The urthane gives a bit more witch allows for less damage. If your car is going to be that low then you want something durable just incase you face a situation like mine. Keep in mind that what I went through was not a minor scrape or rub or contact. I was just TOO low to clear, head on contact with blacktop. Even after all that ... it ony broke in 2 pieces.

Just make sure that you go to a well know or quality body shop because the urthane tends to secrete oils and the shop needs to do good prep wotk to allow the paint to stay.

*** UPDATE ***

I got an estimate and faxed it over to the company who stated they would get back to me after new years ... (they were debating if they were going to claim this w/ their ins. company or to just eat the cost of the damage)
Well, they ate it!
I received a check last week for 760.00 ... every penny of the estimate.
hmmm .... I will be making like over a hundred dollars profit!
Thanks W.M. Keller & Sons!!
WOOT!

*** END UPDATE ***

LOL yeh i used to work for a landscaping company and if we busted a window or whatever our insurance covered it...we did work for the city also as a sub contractor...most likely what that company was.....no construction or labor company for that matter can work legally without insurance to cover damages etc.......good job gettin paided lol
