Here's what I bought:
Alpine 9807 MP3 capable HU
JL10W0-4 10" sub
Alpine MPR-M350 sub amp
Supplies (cable, wire harness, dash pocket, wood for sub cabinet, etc)
I spent roughly $700 Canadian for all of this. I made my own sub box and did the install myself. Rewarding and cost saving even though I cut my hand on the engine block and still have a scab 7 weeks later!
Given your budget, you'd have $800 left over for components and a 2 channel amp, which should be plenty.
Nothing I bought is considered "high-end", but I think they were all smart purchases for a mid-range system (and made with the help of folks here). If I had ym time back, I might go for a Elemental Designs sub as I keep hearing great things and their pricing is awesome. Locally warranty was a concern for me as opposed to US bought stuff.
Anyway, I listen to a lot of scratch DJ type hip hop stuff, as well as 80's type stuff and Radiohead/Coldplay type stuff. The system I have performs admirably with all of these music types and is plently loud inside the car. Its not a basshead system that rattles the neighborhood, and since I went sealed on my sub enclosure, its more punchy than it is super-low, but it goes low enough to meet my hip hop needs.
Being a Canadian, unfortunately means that some of the US bargains (Elemental Design subs, KnuKonceptz witing kits) are likely to not be that cheap once they are shipped and you are dinged for duties, so I bought my stuff locally.
Basically, I'd recommend you go into a local quality stereo shop (not a Future Shop, but a "real" audio store), and start talking with one of the guys there. Get advice and recommendations from them, then buy nothing and come back here and ask what folks think of what you have been told. If they don't dispute what the sales guy told you, then you have found a decent place to buy.
Good luck!
