Hell Yeah!!!

I dont have it bad. My parents help me pay for school. I have an assistantship starting in August for grad school so then i wont have to pay anymore. Im graduating in May with my four year degree. Looking back, I wish I could have gone to a different school. I love the University that I am at and I've learned a lot. But there were places I wanted to go but couldn't because I didn't have the money and couldn't get the scholarships.
I came to a cheap school so my parent's wouldn't have to kill themselves working. I'm graduating in May too. It's taken me five years, but hey, double major in computer science and math isn't too easy. Like you said, not my first choice. But I love the life I have here, the people I've met and the experiences I've had. However, if I could go back and change something, I would just to see what would happen. Of course, I didn't get jack for scholarships because I was lazy. Just barely living on financial aid, working at Best Buy, and on campus.

Oh yeah, and for anyone else out there who has a kid who's going to be enrolling soon, when doing taxes, file separately (if married). It increases the chances of getting any type of aid (grants, loans, etc). My girlfriend's parents filed separately (then ironically separated) and she got enough money to work part time and still go to school (someone had to pay for books).

i love it...its about time... i tried filling out scholarships last year and there was basically nothing for whites...everything was for hispanic's and african americans... i really dont see what all the fuss is about...other races have been giving scholarships away for years that are only given to people in their race...

I cant go to school because i cant afford it.. i dont qualify for financial aid/scholarships.. because i am 20 years old. Now, if i had a kid or was married then my income (which isnt much) would qualify for financial aid. But until i am 24 my parents income counts.. they say they make too much... yet they do not take into account that my parents have car payments, house payments, ur normals bills and 3 kids in college and 1 in private school. my dad has to work 2 jobs just to make ends meet and for that they say he makes too much. but if i was a minority my school probably would be paid for.

I just wish this country would spend more time and money to help people go to school. and every single year in DE the tution is increasing just to pay the salaries at the schools. The US spent $10 millioin dollars to RENT giant panda's from china to study them... whats wrong wit that picture??

You got to be shitting me. There are millions and millions of dollars of scholarship money out there and you blame the fact that the reason why you can't find a scholarship is because they were all specifically meant for hispanics and african americans? I don't think so.

yea i would have to agree with snacks. i wouldnt argue they dont exist for everyone, but i do still think they should be specific by race/religion/sex.

It's unfortunate that it has came down to this race issue. Scholarships should be always handed out to those for academic excellence or service to the community. Not by what color skin you have.

Babygirl,
Why dont you go to Community College for a couple years first? Thats what I did. Its only like $500 - $700 a semester.

Im not saying that i cant get money because there are alot of scholarships out there for everyone...but if you do search through the scholarships there are alot of scholarships that the specifications to apply only allow minorities. i am not trying to make this a race issue and sound like a racist asshole or anything. i believe that it shouldnt matter about race. my opinion is that all scholarships should be offered to everyone not just one specific race...(my comment above was stupid and i meant to imply that just because there is one scholarships given to whites doesnt make it right that there are plenty more just given to other races as well.) i dont really understand what all the fuss is about because people are not complaining about the other scholarships that only allow hispanics or blacks or any other race to apply...but all the sudden there is a white scholarship and people ...go "ohhhhh thats not right" i think thats some BS. people need to understand that racism goes both ways...and (not talking about anyone on this forum) everyone just needs to get over this whole race thing...im tired of all the races playing that bad race card!!!!...:(
I am very sorry if offended anyone of you on this forum.

You're right that they don't take bills and debt into account. I've seen this happen to many people, including minorities. When it comes to how much money your parents make, it doesn't matter your or their ethnicity. If fin.aid. claims that your parents make to much, then that's it. They make too much.

Taken from finaid.org:

[font=ARIAL, HELVETICA]There are a few sources of aid such as unsubsidized Stafford and PLUS loans that are available regardless of need.

Also, your Expected Family Contribution has nothing to do with ethnicity. If you want to check what it should be:
http://www.finaid.org/calculators/finaidestimate.phtml

I was just on FastWeb looking through about 30-40 scholarships, and only 5 were ethnicity related. Most anyone can apply for.

None offense taken...your statement was very general that's all. There are literally a ton of resources out there you can use to find a scholarship that fits your needs. And I can probably guarantee that the vast majority of them don't care about the color of your skin.
