I can only assume you did or you wouldn't be saying that. More power to you if you did just that, I admire that. Yes, working thru college and having two jobs because I wasn't qualified for anything was hard so now I'm just working. Fortunately my father has come to me and said he'd help me out w/my education now. So finally I may be able to get some sort of degree. But it wasn't an automatic you've graduated high school now so here's your $100k for college honey! What I'm saying is this is not happening because of the color of my skin.

that is so not fair, unless you know her situation. I got scholarships, received a few loans, and made a good amount of money working through school, but some schooling basically mandates (through workload) that you not work otherwise you screw up the education that your getting just so you can afford it.

Thanks Phreak, it's true, situation makes a huge difference to each individual's exact struggle. I am not by any means discounting the fact that it can be harder for a minority to do what a white person may be able to. BUT, a lot does depend on the individual's drive to accomplish what THEY want, not what society views they are deemed to have. My father interviewed for a job once and was turned away because it was the advent of Affirmative Action and a black man got the job over him even though he was more qualified. If you ask me I think it's an insult to the minorities that they should be force fed this extra hand up in order to get to where they want to be in life.

My best friend whose parent's weren't priviledged, nor even near wealthy, was denied financial aid. And she graduated #1 in our class; however, she applied for scholarships and got them. Not because of her ethnicity, because she was willing and termined to go to get a higher education.
that's great for her, not everyone in that situation is that lucky. the school that I wanted to go to (and went to) at first told me they'd cover about 10% of my tuition with a scholarship leaving over $20k for me to pay with loans or whoring myself out (I don't know if I could've made that kinda cash even with the whoring :D ) but they found my SAT/ACT scores and I got a good deal. It's particular to the situation and for some people these ethnic scholarships are that break for them. These scholarships (unfortunately even this ridiculous, "Whites-Only led by a Puerto-Rican" scholarship) attempt, in theory, to smooth over the improprieties in the system and I can't imagine anyone (not bigot, of course) that wouldn't advocate an equal opportunity system. Its fine to disagree on whether on not the imbalances still exist, but I think these types of scholarships are still necessary given the out-of-whack public school system we have...

I'm just saying anyone can, if they try. It just seems that white people will more often sit back and complain, than work as hard as an immigrant new to the idea of freedom. It's easier to become jealous than to become confident.

I take offense to that statement really. Right there you're saying that white people would rather complain than work hard. You want to tell that to my father who worked his ass off and is now a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force Intelligence now busting his ass down in Guantanamo Bay? How about you swing over to Iraq and tell my brother he's not working hard enough and complains too much for being a white boy. No offense, but I see a lot of black people complain, I've seen asians complain, I've seen every ******* race you can imagine complain about how the system is jerking them and they can't get ahead. I can understand an immigrant working hard to secure their American dream, but a person born in this country doesn't have that same struggle so there really can't be any comparison there.

well said and i agree phish.

here was my problem with college. my dad didnt make much because he owns his own business and business sucked at the time. my step mom made over 100k a year, and so i didnt qualify for s***. but you think that b**** helped me through college? nope. i had to pay CASH to get through school. and i had to drop out because the only job i could get that made enough to pay for it (selling cars) had me working 12 hour days with every day except sundays, where i worked for my dad for a few extra bucks a month.

all this while my best friend who was black won a black only scholarship by writing a goddamned essay saying why he was proud to be black that put him all the way through med school and all he had to do was pay for books and a ******* parking pass.

every minority race (not everyone IN that race, but you get the point) bitches and moans about "woe is me, i was oppressed 200 goddamn years ago so everyone owes me something". im not racist - not against people who believe they have the free will to succeed in life on their own without recieving handouts from everyone.

while i know this group mentioned in the article has not the best reputation, i am not supporting them, but their idea that EVERYONE should be equal. i understand that people oppressed the indians, and blacks, etc years ago...but I DID NOT.

Clownfish,

I have a 3.8 in my degree area classes and a 3.5 overall. Its not the best GPA but it is the best that I can do. I also have a 24 on the ACT.

I have more recommendations than anyone could hope for. Its just hard trying to find scholarships I qualify for. The only ones I qualify for are National and you are up against like 10,000 people. My school isn't expensive, so I'm ok. BUT, this was in no way my first choice of schools. There's no way I can afford other schools without having $80K in loans by graduation.

I do work 2 jobs, and dont mind it. But what is the difference in a very poor minority working 2 jobs through college and me working 2 jobs through college.

kats - That's pretty damn good in my book! What's the requirement for scholarships? 4.0? Your GPA puts you at about B+/A- right? It's been a while since I've been in school so I'm not sure what the scale is these days. Maybe they need to adjust requirements today to account for more than race. It sucks that you can't get a scholarship w/those grades. Wish I was making those in HS!

Edit: Didn't get the rest of your post before. I would be thanking the Gods if I could maintain that kind of GPA w/2 jobs. It's a struggle that's for sure. It was hard enough for me to have 2 jobs AND school much less all 3. I think back now and really wish I WOULD have taken on that extra struggle and worked through it because maybe I wouldn't be starting again now. *sigh* Hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20 unfortunately my present is 20/400! :p

obviously your jobs pay much more

I'm still using the context of the rupublican party in this news post as the example of "white people". Not your examples of fine hard workers. Can you honestly say your examples are common? I'm just coming from a first person view of whiney people bitching about their parents not giving them enough money or them having to work 3 hours a night delivering pizza in their brand new car to pay the dorm costs. Then blowing their book money at the end of the year when they sell them all back. THAT is the common attitude here at SHSU.

I see your point there Equinox but to call all white people complainers is a blanket stereotype. As uncommon as these examples may be they are still white people. If I went out and said all black people do is sit around and b**** and moan and demand reparations OMG I couldn't imagine the backlash. Oh, but my best friend's husband is black and he works hard to support their family so it's ok to still say hey James, you're a lazy complaining black person who needs Affirmative Action to get a job. Or what about all asians work hard and don't slack off yet my husband's friend is running out on his family and quit his job, but it's ok because all asians are hard workers.

No matter which way you put it stereotypes are wrong simply for the fact that they put a judgement on a people as a whole and don't look at the individual which is why they ARE stereotypes. I don't like being told all I do is sit around and complain because I'm white. WTF?! I'm not republican and I'm not part of that group so don't categorize me with that section because I'm white.

Man it sucks that that's the attitude of the majority where you are. I think I would feel the same if I had to listen to that bulls***. But don't let that jade your perspective of people who are doing what they should be doing to get ahead. Besides, and I'm not trying to put a cop out on this, these kids are still young and don't know responsibility for s***. I do the same damn thing, b**** about how I need tires then go and blow $200 on V'day. WTF? That's not the right way to do things but I did, sux, you move on and learn from mistakes.

Whites aren't allowed white only anything, because we misused, and OVERused it in the past. Mathew, don't fit the army stereotype and be racist too. :D j/j

This isn't exactly the group I want representing white people anyhow. They are already known for writing slanderous articles in the college papers about the local Gay-RIGHTS group indoctrinating people into homosexual sex. I hope a local bedding store doesn't start having a sale on white sheets.
Damn and to think I thought Mattykins was a Mexican :)

Just joking obviously... but, I couldn't resist.

I dont have it bad. My parents help me pay for school. I have an assistantship starting in August for grad school so then i wont have to pay anymore. Im graduating in May with my four year degree. Looking back, I wish I could have gone to a different school. I love the University that I am at and I've learned a lot. But there were places I wanted to go but couldn't because I didn't have the money and couldn't get the scholarships.
