Heat Wrap a Header

I have the AWR Header, and I wanted to find a heat wrap for it, since it runs 1200+ degress, and that's a little more than what the engine bay was exposed to stock. I think I saw once some heatwrap that pretty much looked like gauss, like medical grade ow my arm hurts, gauss. I think it would look nice with each exhaust tube on the header wrapped with the heatwrap gauss. Anyone ever heatwrapped a header, about how much in length would I need?

I've been looking here for my heatwrap, any good ideas?

this stuff adheasive on the back or what?

looks like it would work, it probably has a slightly sticky side to adhere it the first time and then over the first couple uses I would think the glue would then cure or set more permanently.

after searching turns out there are little stainless steel clamps you buy as well in the same section of the site to clamp it, pretty much they are cheaper versions of hose clamps. I guess no sticky backside.

I have used this stuff a million times on diff. muscle/drag car projects. You will love it, makes a huge diff. in underhood temps. After cruising around for a couple hours in my '74 Plymouth 'Cuda with a built 360 and the headers wrapped, you could touch the header wrap without losing skin, (it was hot as hell though). I will warn you, if you install this on anything other than top of the line headers, you will find out well your header is made. (Cracked welds, etc.) The heat can't escape so the steel gets extremely hot under the wrap.

sorry, almost forgot, the Thermotec brand comes in a roll that you soak in water when you are ready to use it. The water softens the wrap and it becomes really flexible. I always used C/V boot clamps to secure it. They look like stainless steel zip-ties, you can pick them up from most auto parts stores and they're pretty inexpensive.

I've used the stuff on motorcycles before. I don't remember it having a sticky side. Like SF said, you'll have to secure it somehow at the ends to keep it from unravelling.

yea i wrapped my awr headers about two months ago and it did lower the temp under the hood i just used regular hose clamps and it has been working fine but don not soak the material at least not fot thermotech, the instructions state to just wet it not to soak it.

thanks for the info, otherwise I would have dunked the s*** in a sink, hah

I don't think anything can sticky well at 1200+ degrees.

Glue no sticky that hot.

And I think you mean gauze...But I know what you were getting at.

yeah I guess I do mean gauze, I guess I just play to many sci fi strategy games that feature guass cannon weaponry, pronounced the same as gauze :D

I kind of figured that too.

But I thought gauss was a 's' sound not a 'z' sound...

I've played many a game myself. No worries. Just a little ribbin' when your tummy is full after T-day...:p

Equinox you do have the expensive stainless AWR Header and not the Mild steel one right? My bet is that the mild steel one would do a backflip into jelly with header wrap on it...

Installshield 2- They never actually made a mild steel version, or stopped when I bought mine. The only one they had available was the stainless. My suggestion is to get it JetHot coated. No worries about glue or anything coming off and it looks good forever.....Plus, none of the wrap manufacturers offer any kind of warranty on their stuff, but JetHot does. Best bet, in my mind.

nope I have the mild steel, that's why I wanted to coat it in the first place, it's rusting, now it's just too hot. You think it will crack? =p

Equinox- When did you get the mild steel version?? I bought mine from Mitch at p5online and he told me that they never made the mild steel version and were only offering a stainless at that time (about 5 months ago or so).

Honestly I don't know what would happen, but I definately wouldn't recommend it...basically the heat wrap does not allow the header piping to cool as quickly, and keeps more heat on the pipes overall...

The molecular makeup of mild steel is different than that of stainless...I can't remember exactly but stainless steel has nickel I believe filling the gaps between the bigger stronger molecules...which overall makes it stronger...mild steel basically has nothing filling those gaps, which makes it prone to heat cycling problems...and makes it weaker than stainless overall, albeit lighter...

But another variable is the thickness of the piping (not the diameter, but the thickness of the metal layering that creates the pipes)...You could be ok with wrapping it, but again I wouldn't do it...a thick piped mild steel header could potentially be stronger than a thin piped stainless header...but I never saw a mild steel header last long with heat wrap...

btw, o.g.sk8er has heat-wrapped his AWR header, and did a very good job of it. You may wish to PM him. I think he's been sick lately though.
