Hear clunks when shifting.....

I hear a soft clunk when I shift from 1st to 2nd and a heavier clunk when I shift from 2nd to 3rd? It usually happens when I shift directly from one gear to another (this time being 2nd to 3rd) quickly. If I shift from 2nd to 3rd by hanging out in neutral for a few seconds, the clunking is not that bad. What gives? Synchros gone bad perhaps??

yea ive heard of a couple of guys having the tranny mount be an issue. i would check that out first. the shifts from 1-2 and 2-3 are most likely to be less smooth, so the more drastic acceleration change could be what's causing it to be more pronounced then.

I've had this and am convinced it's an inherent issue with the design of the car. I took my car in for another clicking noise when accelerating or slowing down (single click when negative traction is placed on engine or suspension components). The Mazda tech said it was a bad engine mount #4 and replaced it. The clunking still happens. It only happens when the shifts arent perfect. If i rev match perfectly, which is tough in this car, it makes no clunking noise.

I just took my car in for a clicking/squeak noice apon the engine rocking in 1st and second, liek when starting from stopped. The checked all the mount said they were fine, but said the driver axel was damaged LOL. I guess at one of the connection points it was bent or rubbing wierd so they replaced it. Lucky I guess.
I still get suttle clunks from first to second but I think Its just the nature of the tranny.

Did the axle replacement fix the clicking noise?

When I had this issue it was a bad tranny mount.

I have a set of SU engine mounts. Driver, passenger and rear mounts and still get a clunking. All bots are tight as well as sway bars, end links, etc.

Anything else to check to see what could be causing the "clunk"?

Yeah any help with the clunking/clicking would be awesome! 2 Dealerships have been no help.

Going to the dealer tomorrow with my 09...I have clunking when shifting 1-2 and 2-3......and I have really loud clatter at idle. it sounds like a detroit diesel. Car has 9,500 miles and is 3 months old......I drove Honda's an Subies all my life, I hope Mazda does not give me a problem.

I've noticed this problem for a while now, but I've always thought it was normal. I guess now I gotta get it checked out. My dealer is i think going out of business soon, so don't think they will give a crap about fixing this issue. Hopefully we find an answer here.

Ok, so the dealer did not find anything wrong on either issue. I guess I will not worry about it.....so I guess Mazdaspeed 3's sound like an old diesel at idle and the occasion clunking when shifting at mellow acceleration is normal. I suppose you can only build in so much reifinement at this price point.

Are you guys shifting properly??? Shifting is quite difficult in the mazdaspeed 6 and 3. Especially if your accelerating hard . . . the 1-2 shift "bang" is quite noticable. Motor mounts help alleviate the problem but cause increased idle vibration. I only have one mount but it has reduced the shift bang but its still present. Reduced it about 50%.
