headers

Headers

From what I heard you couldn't due to the 2 O2's and the two CAT's but hey I could be wrong.
I heard of a couple of guys who played and broke some engines? somthing about messing with the ECU? and tick tick bang!

the AWR header will work on our cars without mods...
there is only ONE o2 sensor on our cars... i was planning on ordering his header next week... you will need to get a obdII program to clear the codes or put a cpu resistor on the o2 sensor due to the missing cat...
there is also an egr hookup on his header ...

Headers

Can some one post or pm me some links, as I have spoken to a very good source on this matter and he said that headers on a P5 would kill it due to the ECU freaking out? Does anyone know anyone with headers on a P5 that work?

Cheers
Scotty

like mazdamp3_18 said, the ECU will freak out, because you are getting rid of a cat, that is integrated into the headers. You can get around it with an OBDII program or putting a resistor from radio shak on the O2 sensor.

Um, actually there are two. One in the exhaust manifold before the cat, and one in the cast steel downpipe after the cat. The first measures and adjusts fuel mixture and the 2nd monitors cat efficiency and will also take the place of the 1st one if the #1 O2 sensor malfunctions. They are both 4 wire heated sensors. My header works perfectly as it maintains the cat in the factory location and both O2's. Also, the EGR hooks right up. I've never thrown a code with it except the one time I tried unhooking the VTCS control solenoid to get the damn cold rattle to stop. I'm taking care of that damn noise this next month.

what exactly will happen if you don't get the obdII program? or the resistor? Like what are we talking about by ecu freaking out?

Headers

To Mp3boy1984,
Well the car needs both O2 sensors (according to the car makers) and by removing the top O2 sensor the car's ECU will go "what the f**K" and do one of two things, 1./rung the car really badly (ie rich/lean) or 2./ not run at all.
I was informed by a friend who has a Protege5 (SP20) here in Australia that some guy made up three sets of headers by request for someone, they took them and bolted them on. Thinking sweet the car will go fast and it did for about 3 mins...then bang oops new engine time. Now no one will go near them due to 3 guys no having blown engines up. But hey if you or anyone else has found away around it then let me know.

To Equinox whats a OBDII?? and what does the resitor do?

Cheers
Scotty

I could see no possible way that a header would make the engine blow up....especially if you take care of the first o2 sensor before the first cat.

I am working on a really good 02 signal system that is specific for our cars. So be getting rid of the primary cat the ecu will not freak out and you will not trip any cells. I should have some units in a weeks time

omg, i swear, if one of the companies such as obx or hp racing doesn't get off there ass's soon and release the header i am just going to buy the apc headers made for the protege.....yes, sad as it is, but i desperatly want a header for my car.

whats even sadder (sp?) is that it will proabaly make as much power as teh other companies header.

Has anyone bother reading my posts? The first O2 sensor HAS to be retained since it is the main one the ECU uses to adjust A/F. You can mount it anywhere by lengthening the harness to it, but it MUST be retained. You can try to trick the ECU into thinking that there is a second O2 with and eliminator kit, you can run single cat farther back in the exhaust and put the 1st O2 in front of it and the 2nd O2 behind it (much better idea), or you can retain the factory cats and use a short header. That's what I did, and it was worth it.

And no, it will only be louder if the header is thin, or not coated very well. What you will hear on a thin header is a metallic noise that is caused by the exhaust pulses 'ringing' the header like a bell. Mine is ceramic coated inside and out and is WAY quiter than a plain painted design. I made the first one and used header wrap and it made the typical increased radiated noise sounds of a plain metal header. The ceramic coated one doesn't. It's just about the same noise under the hood as the stock manifold. No CEL's, just more power and bragging rights about having the only Protege header in town! I've gotten a lot of compliments on it around here.
