header

it would be cool to make a shorty header for those who want that but i rather have a 4-2-1 or 4 into 1 longtube design something that makes power.I could careless about the cats being on the car plus i want to take it to the track run it road race and other stuff like that. I want to make power without the restriction of the cats.

Yeah, make a 4-2-1 for the rest of the country and a shorty for us in the People's Republic of CA who try to keep our daily drivers compliant with our stringent air quality laws! (2thumbs)

Ahhh, the plight of the PRC. We'd still have to get it CARB certified to keep your necks out of the noose, and that's a pretty steep cost from what we've been told, but I'm not against looking into it. I downloaded the information on EO certification (which mind you looks like a MIL spec document from the 1960's that was written on a Columbia Barlock #8 Typewriter) and grabbed an application off their website to take a look at what would be required of us if we would choose to go that route. I'll tell you right now, I'm not making any promises. Their requirements to certify the parts per year of car and other items make compliance near prohibitive for smaller run parts like a Protege header.

I'll keep you posted - I do like the idea of a modular setup with a factory style front catalyst flange...that would probably work out quite well.

yeah but could you not also make the 4-2-1 longtube and have in under off road use only and those who would buy it would no the circumstances anyway.

For the record, a shorty header HAS been tried before. Definitely flowed better up top. The welding of the tubes to teh flange was an issue though as the design was cheaped out there; it always cracked.

I'm glad to know that it HAS been done and CAN be done; and with the folks at Corksport finally on board I'm sure that it will be done PROPERLY. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that they can get it CARB certified for the PRC. (yes)

If anyone wants to read up more on it, look up Wagner Motorsports. They also had a "test pipe" replacing the precat, and a big j-pipe to connect to the stock exhaust

i have some cad drawings of a header i had designed but never made for the protege.. Long runner 4-1 header. Pipes equalized early, so was easy to lengthen to bias the power lower, or shorten to bias it higher..
may consider giving the design to a manufacturer in exchange for a freebie ;)

AWR and the OBX/Ractive garbage is one thing (I have an OBX; despise it), but don't forget that Mazda itself made a 4-2-1 header. It was/is a nice piece of kit.

As quoted in the thread below from Edwin:
The part number under the JDM MazdaSpeed catalog is QBJ1-13-450 and the factory Mazda part number is FS9P-13-450A (because it came stock on the MSF/JDM MP3)... the headers retails for $950

It better be a nice piece of kit for the crazy amount of money being asked for it (1100$+ at Corksport which is the only place you can buy it).

The $1100 part on our website is an AutoExe part, and yes, it's extremely high quality. But the dollar's in the crapper right now and that's not helping cost of JDM parts.

Other alternatives also included

* Hurrican Headers - http://hurricaneheaders.com.au/hurricane/products_main.php?txt1=Headers / Manifolds<br>/ Turbo Exhausts&txt2=Headers / Extractors&txt3=MAZDA&txt4=323&txt5=4 CYL&lvl1=1&lvl2=5&lvl3=20&lvl4=109&lvl5=1094)

And at one time, Pacesetter was making them too.(http://www.pacesetterexhaust.com/headers_detail.php#notes)

I remember seeing some other mild steel header company but can't think of it at the moment.

Point being: 4-2-1 headers for the FS motor were relatively plentiful at one time.

You're totally right, but fat luck finding the actual Mazda one :P

The Hurricane one looks exactly like the 4-1 piece made by Ractive...

There was also Genie that made a 4-2-1 mild steel in a blue finish. The last place I saw them was in the land down under. Maybe if AWR still have there Jig that might be a good place to start.
