header discussion

Alright, with all the talk of headers, cats, and people with turbos talking about 02 sensors it got me to thinking...i know dangerous teritory. For the sake of discussion and to get the idea out there what are the possiblities of having an equal length long type header with integral high-flow cat. What I'm thinking is a header similar to the old MX6 header everyone was trying at the start of all this, execpt include a cat. conv., eliminate the second cat, and still have two o2 sensor bungs and an egr port. The only thing that I can think of that would be a problem is if the CEL would activate for a cat. conv. not effecient code. I've seen that prob on a few cars with aftermarket replacement cats. Next question, i know it would probably be expensive, but what would you guys reaction to this type of header be. Again, this is for discussion, i'm not planning on making or buying one of these, just thought I would guage everyone's reactions.

I think there are a lot of people here that are waiting for a header. I personally am hoping the hp racing header comes out, since it will include the 02 simulator to get rid of the CEL light (probably just a resister that goes in the 2nd o2). I also plan on getting a high flow cat to replace the 2nd cat.
I think it basically comes down to whomever gets a header released first will get a bunch of anxious customers. Those who wait, will lose.
To me discussion time is over, its time for action from someone. :)

The HP equal length header is supposed to replace both cats. Rishie @ Automotive R&D is to be receiving a test unit for a dyno run soon, and told me the race pipe has a built in hi-flow cat. That don't really make sense, but either way I put money down with him for the pipe. We'll just have to wait and see. Since I live in a state with no vehicle inspections what so ever, I don't care about the cats, EGR, or any of that EPA crap. JUST GIVE ME A PIPE!

I actually agree with you about not caring about any of the emmissions. A high flow cat would be a good bundle, since it will remove our restrictive secondary cat, and I am sure it would also quiet down the exhaust (its already loud with a cat-back, with no cats and new header I can just imagine).

Anyways, back to the point, the biggest problem about no EGR and NO O2 sensors is the CEL light being on all the time. If we dont allow for this, I really hate driving with that light on, but who knows what the computer will do with the light on, detune the engine??

The EGR can be nixed no problem once the OBDII sensor is tricked. And it will need to be tricked if the hi-flow cat is far enough down stream. Being an ULEV, the sensitivity of the 2nd O2 sensor is high at the ECU, and the cooler cat down stream would likely set it off. I normally don't remove the EGR anyway. I just pinch the pipe down and restrict the flow. With the FS motor, that will likely lean the F/A ratio out just about right based on the reading from the 1st O2. I'm not worried about seeing a CEL as long as I know everything is working OK. It's easy enough to trick the OBDII anyway.
