He anyone ever pulled a pop up style camper with their CX9?

I just installed a curt hitch on mine and I know that it does not have the towing package. I am not opposed to having an additional tranny cooler installed and even the larger radiator if needed. Its gotta be cheaper than buying a beater truck and them having to insure / maintain that too. Not to mention I need to be able to haul 2 adults, 2 kids, and a 50 lb lab. That rules out all non extended cab pickups and I really dont want another SUV.

The camper I am looking at has a 2500 lb dry weight so it should be well under the 3500 lbs max for the towing package. I would not be pulling more than 2-3 hours at a clip but we do have some rather hilly terrain around here. Typically I would not pull more than 60-90 minutes to a campground in the mountains nearby.

Does anyone else on here pull a pop up camper and what are your experiences? I'd like to get an idea of what I may be getting into before I actually buy a camper and find out it was a really bad idea.

Thanks in advance for any advice

I'm looking into purchasing a CX-9 for the same reason. You will want to upgrade to tow package specifications as you are already aware. As long as your camper has brakes I don't think you'll have any problem. In other countries vehicle tow ratings are much higher for identical specification vehicle. You have to take into account the gross vehicle weight. With the camper wet weight, all the additional passengers and cargo etc...
I will eventually be pulling a Trailmanor popup with mine.

Thanks for the reply glassman. I think it should work out fine, i just need to find a decent tranny cooler. One plus is that i will primarily be staying in campgrounds with water, and sewage hookups, so wet tank weight will not really be an issue for me. 2500lbs should give me plenty of leeway for passengers and cargo for what will mostly be 3-4 day weekend trips.

I hope to get it ready for spring. The wife may have talked me into selling the Harley, so i should have the cash needed if that happens.
(Unless i change my mind after a nice long ride, which has happened the past few times I thought about selling it) Damn things are as addictive as they are expensive, and I hate to think about giving it up.

Even a roadking gets 40 mpg. Keep it Bro!

Sell the trans am! Like any boat, it's a money pit.

I wish i got 40mpg. More like 32 mpg, but i am 6'2" and 250 lbs so I probably cause my own problems there. Plus it is not fuel injected, one of the last big twins with a carb. It is the most enjoyable transportation I've ever owned, but with two little ones now, it spends a lot of time in the garage.

I've had the TA since high school. Only 50k miles, all factory original, numbers matching and garage kept. I know its not worth much now, but maybe someday there will be nostalgia for mullets, hair metal, and mid 80's F bodies that weren't beat to death. It also spends a lot of time in garage, but at least I can haul the kids in it if I have to.

My buddy recently sold his cherry mid 90's Troof, red leather babe magnet. NO REGRETS.

He finally got that the girls were just snickering now,..
