Have a CX-5 - what should we get as our 2nd car?

My girlfriend (our 2nd car) always leases, used to always be Saturns until they went away, so far since has been Chevy Cruzes. But, this next time around when her car comes off lease, I may give her my CX-5, and I'll get something else, then it'll still be in the family, plus I get something new. I bore easily :-/ If it were today, it'd be another CX-5. But, it's probably 2 or 3 years out, so, if they update the Equinox or Terrain, I'd look at those, and possibly the Buick Envision if they bring it to the states.

The answer is always a Miata.
If we had a 3 car garage, that'd be on the list as well!!

Used to be a loyal VW owner and bought 3 new VW's. But I finally had it enough on its poor quality and reliability and will never buy another one unless VW makes significant improvement. If you don't mind about the reliability, go get the 4-door GTI and join those unhappy VW owners later filing the class action lawsuit against VW of America for its problematic 2.0T turbo!
Gotcha. We've got an 07 rabbit that's still pretty good at 130k. Wife only digs VW hatches so we move on it'll likely be either GTI or TDI. Hope the MK7 dispells the reputation.

A '07 Rabbit? You meant Golf? Yeah, I almost forgot that VW of America did bring back the old name with bad reputation for several years recently which was used in 1980's in the US market instead the Golf nameplate used in the Europe. Consumer Reports recommended VW Rabbit for a couple of years in 80's then sent it to the Do-Not-Buy list as Rabbit was simply having too many problems! At that time I still bought a VW Jetta which made all friends of mine questioning me why I bought a VW with such a bad reputation!

Despite the reliability concerns, I haven't found any comparable hot hatches that measure up to vws superficial attributes (size, looks, finish, build). I feel the GTI or TDI strikes a great balance. I'm not too keen on the Focus or Subaru hatches. I read Honda is bringing back a hatch but I doubt it'll be developed into a fighter.

Lol my wife drives our 2014 CX5 and I have a 2011 328 AWD with 94,000 trouble free miles on it so far. Most likely in a few years I will get another 328 since its redesign in 2012 now does 5.7 0-60. The Mazda 6 is a great car, but I can't understand why they don't offer a six or at least a turbo 4. The current four cylinder in all the road test I have read just barely makes 0-60 in 8.0 seconds which is too slow for a modern day sports car in my opinion. My current car with the non turbo 6 does it in just under 7 seconds, but the smooth six is much more responsive and less noisy than the Mazda 4 banger. Granted the Mazda is 20 grand cheaper, but I would be perfect with a more powerful engine. On another note my son has a 2015 Mazda 3 hatchback and that car handles very well and has a lot of pep with the 2.5 engine. I have to give Mazda props as their steering feel and handling are exceptional. Add a more powerful engine and they would be perfect.

The new 6 really doesn't feel like a 0-8 sec car esp after the break-in period. Def not a sub 7 second car though. Mazda claims 7.5. I plan on getting an OrangeVirus tune sometime in the future. Increased responsiveness yet retaining efficiency when driving normal. This vid clip is a 2014 Mazda6 doing 0-100km (0-62 mph) in what appears to be 6.5-6.8 seconds. I'd gather that the Mazda3 2.5 could reach the low 6's.

I test drove a 6. I felt overall it was a slow experience. Sorta what I felt with the 2.0 in the CX5 - why I waited a tad for 2.5. The 6 would be nice if it had just a bit more especially with passengers.

Too bad no more cx7 huh OP. Would you have waited if they kodo'd the cx7?

Possibly. I may even consider spending a little more and getting a CX-9. Seems like that's the best reviewed 3-row SUV out there. It just seems a little dated to me, looks-wise, and I worry in the next year or two they'll do a redesign and I'll be kicking myself. But I guess that's life.

You mention storage and a 2nd child - have you considered a Mazda 5?! We had a 2008 with a manual tranny and it was actually fun to drive. The only reason we traded it in was because the GT at the time did not have leather, heated seats, upgraded stereo, bluetooth etc. The new ones do. The kids loved the captains seats in the 2nd row and the 3rd row was tight, but fine for kids. Storage behind the 2nd row is actually pretty good. Like you, we had a great car that was getting too expensive to maintain (Saab 9-5 sport combi) so we have gone to 2 Mazda's (6 and a CX-5) with no regrets. The CX-9 is a beast and about as much fun to drive as a Suburban. We have had them as loaners and could not wait to get our cars back.

The new cx9 is slated to debut this November in LA with a Chance of a cx7 concept.

as of now I have the cx5 highlander and the new cx9 on my shortlist

Does anyone know if the 2015 Mazda 6 has the same electronics/head-unit as my '14 CX-5? Not my favorite part of the CX-5 and would hate to repeat that mistake.

Tune is worth it.

well guys, made the decision this weekend and ended up buying a new '15 Accord v6 yesterday.

I test drove a '15 Mazda 6, and it just felt too underpowered compared to the Accord's v6 - not a fair fight, I know, but I got the Accord for less money than a deeply discounted 6.

The other thing that struck me when comparing the two cars is how much roomier the Accord feels, particularly in the back seat (where we have to put child safety seats). The 6 was a snug fit, and with the Accord there's still a ton of space.

Still happy to be a part of the Mazda family with our CX-5 though!
