Hatch is rusting on my 2003.5?!

Yes, unlimited mileage, and something like 7 years. If there is bubbling, that is covered under the perforation warranty. Check your owners manual, well specifically the warranty guide, it is talked about in there.

Cool, thanks man! :) Good to hear...

The day I see a rust bubble on my p5, will be the day I go and buy a Kia.(sad1) O, and someone at the Mazda dealership will also get a bubble on the side of the head.(fight) I hate rust.........(bang)

my p5 rust story goes like this:

my 2002.5 p5 started to rust on the inside of both the rear wheel wells (around the lip of the fender), as witnessed by many IL peeps including ken (captain krm). i figured it should be covered under warranty since it was only 2.5 years old at the time. took it to the dealer and after a week of nagging them they decided they wouldnt cover it because they said it was 'probably' caused by rock chips and other debris hitting the inside of the fender. i was pissed so i went to my trusted body shop to get an estimate. even with a discount it would have still cost over $1000 to fix. so i lost my mind and traded it in for a black 2004 rx-8. i had that for 5 months before i decided that i didnt really want it because it was an auto (blame the wife) and i didnt want to deal with it in the winter (which was approaching). i traded the rx-8 (and lost my ass) in for my '05 3s that i currently have and will own until it dies.

moral of the story: dont let your frustration and emotions get the best of you. if i could have done it all over again, i would have kept the p5 (rust and all) until the ms3 came out.

good luck and i hope it works out for you.

That's a painful story to read. Being upside down on a car is NOT good.

yeah, it sucked at the time. however, ive caught up with my 3 and i may actually have a little equity in it, which is not typical when it comes to owning a car.

this is crazy.
Has anybody else had this happen with their P5?
The paint is bubbling up all down the rear lower seam.
Hopefully get to King's Mazda later today to see what they can/will do about it?

I had the same issue, the dealer first said warranty only against perforations. I scraped the paint flakes off drilled 3 pin holes and rubbed salt and saliva all over it (sounds weird I know but I wasn't taking no for an answer). Went back a month later and got a new hatch +5 hours labour from Mazda. The rust is unacceptable, my car wasn't even winter driven the past 2 years. I also had some where the side skirt rubs the doglegs, the car is totally painted now, shouldn't have been but Mazda paint is my biggest complaint.

When paint is bubbling, that is perforation, and that was from the mouth of the regional rep that looked at my car because the dealership was refusing to provide the service.

Hmm. Took her in to the dealership today to have them look at the bubbling I have above the left-rear wheel well. As for the part under the lip of the wheel well, the paint has begun to chip off.

Guy looks at it, runs off to talk to the service manager, then comes back to tell me, "The warranty only covers perforation, which is an actual hole in the metal." (notcool)

Looks like I'll have to live with it for the time being. Should it significantly progress, I may have to pony up the cash to deal with it...

so whats covered here sounds like people are getting mixed messages from mazda, mine is startin with the dam rust on rear wheel fenders and on the hatch right above the "mazda" thing where all that wonderful water and salt just sits and cures into my car. some of the paint is startin to pull off in that area to, seems like they painted the car with one coat and just said **** it. lol do you think they would cover this?

i would really be shocked

Kableguy what color is your P5? If it's yellow, then yeah, they did just paint it with one coat and said **** it.. no clearcoat :P

I don't know if that's entirely true. Yellow may be single stage paint, but that just means the clear is mixed in, not that there isn't any. Also, I've seen a picture of a P5 in yellow with clear signs of clearcoat failure on these forums. You can't have clearcoat failure without a clearcoat.

But, you wouldn't have signs of clearcoat failure with a single stage either, would you?

From what I understand yellow was the only color to get 2 coats, on my classic red I could see through the red to primer on high points where door handle "dimple edges" were. The rep told me that when yellow came off the line you could see right through it, so they went back for another coat. At least that was the explanation for the long waits for yellow. All I know is my red paint was thin as water.

wow, this thread is still alive?

How did everybody make out getting their rust issues covered under warranty?

My first attempt didn't go so well. I intend on going back though to see if I can talk to the regional rep as per Kansei's suggestion...
