Has anyone run into a major repair like this one?

I'm a service advisor at my shop. I'm pertty anal about my Mazda. I really like the car.

We through it up in the air 3 weeks ago and found a rear main seal leak. Now, that is fairly unusual for a car with 60 000 Kilometers on it. Generally there is something internally that causes this to happen.

As it turns out, while up on the hoist, we heard a knock type noise. Possibly a rattle from the motor.

The car still has warranty so I take it to a dealership which is a few blocks away from work (North Hill Mazda in Calgary) They agree that the leak is for sure the rear main and order a part.

A few days later the part came in and the booked me in for the work. I said to them "while you have it apart, let me know if you see anything unusual, because I and 3 other techs hjave heard a knock.

--Please note, I'm not bashing this dealership. The service has been awesome from them! They are friendly and know what they are talking about.

They told me that a baffle in the oil pan broke and that was the knock/rattle noise. It's all under warranty so that is great news.

SO basically after this whole long story, is this common stuff for these cars?
Have you had to replace rear mains (6.8 hour job) and oil pan baffles/o rings?

They've had the car for 3 days today, after the weekend that is 5 days. The time frame sucks, but I can't complain when it's free. lol

This car is babied. It's my daily driver. It goes to the mountains and to work. This can't be normal wear and tear for the car.

What are your opinions?

1st time I've heard of this or read about it here. Sounds crazy, like you would expect from someone autocrossing on regular basis vs. daily driving.

(scratch) Just wondering...two things...

1 - I thought the P5 oil pans did not have baffles in them...

2 - If the oil pan does have baffles in them...how would it get to any place where it would knock...the only way up is through the oil pick-up and unless its floating (the broken baffle)...I cannot see how it would make a knocking noise...

Not to put a crimp in your day or be an a-hole but...maybe you guys know something I don't and can explain it to me...

The p5 oil pan does have baffles.. just really, really basic ones that aren't effective enough to prevent oil starvation.

the pan has very weak baffles (as kansei said) and the moving oil is enough to "slosh" it around the tank. Metal on metal contact will make a noise. Its very possible, just unlikely.

never heard of either of those problems with the P5. Most issues have been with oil starvation, 3rd gear syncro's, and torn motormounts. Although mine did have the primary cat go bad on it. Oh yeah, and there were a few people that had a screw come out of the butterfly in the vtcs and mess up their motor.

Thanks for all of the info guys.

p5inder, see, I was thinking that was a little strange. It almost seems like they are doing more then they are telling me and trying to make it seem like a small problem...you know, saving face.

Thanks again guys

I got the car back today actually. They replaced the rear main seal gasket, rear main housing and oil pan (I through it up on the hoist at my work to notice that) I will have paper work for it later this week.

Sounds like they clean, inspected and polished all the bearings and lower engine while the rear main was done

The car sounds and drives better then before by a long shot!
