I've not yet seen a blown stock engine running the Unichip EMS. So my question is has anyone blown their engine with the Unichip installed?

I'm just curious.

so from what i have read and understood, there are two maps, stock boost and a high boost setting. the stock boost map runs great, but the high boost setting spikes to 13psi and settles around 10psi?

no one on these forums has yet to report a blown engine while using a Unichip for tuning.

how do u use a unichip for tuning... its pretuned.. so im still confused bout that... are stock msps running the hi boost map?? i mean iunno.. what if they get intake/fmic/tb/etc... i looked for places that are unichip vendors who cud tune it.. and it listed a place in CALI ..lol shrug.

yes, you would have to get the Unichip retuned by a Unichip dealer. that's why you should save a mod like this for close to the end of you modding path. that way, you don't have to shell out $$$ to tune it every time. but i guess the downfall is that you can't tune it yourself. it's also crappy if you live far from one a unichip tuner. There is one about 30 mins from me, so that's why i'm thinking of getting one. i will have to see how much added costs it will be to get it tuned and dyno'd.

great question, noclue!

i know lara's been having problems with getting her unichip tuned. she even went to an authorized unichip dealer. search for her threads for more details tho.

but if nobody's blown a motor, using the unichip i think it would go great w/ my wagner sri intake, wagner fmic, and ghl 3" tbe. i don't think i will ever go forged and this would hopefully be my last performance mod (ok maybe MAM's tubular manifold if i ever win the lottery, just cuz its so sexy)

chopstickhero, keep me updated w/ what u find out!

interested! ive been thinking about getting one once i get a few other things since tis pre-tuned. with a baby on the way it makes it hard to get car stuff :(

it modifies the signals the ecu sees just as anyother piggyback would. you can call unichip and they can give you the name and number of a local tuner. i'm planning to run my UC w/o any tuning and I have more mods than what its tuned for. I'm not worried about it as plenty of other owners have aswell.

so it has a stock boost setting and then a high boost setting? what other mods do you have on your ride? how much more do you think you could gain from a proper tune?

ok guys this is a thread for people who have blown their stock engine with the Unichip.

There is a ton of info on the Unichip on this board, a little searching will pretty much find any bit of info you'd ever want to know about it (and more).

Back on topic.....
I have daily driven with a Unichip on the aggressive settings since their release and my motor is still in tact (knock on wood lol). I also drag race the car. The chances of blowing your engine while running non-tuned are greater than if you were running the Unichip or any other properly tuned EMS. The job of the EMS is to tune the vehicle, make everything run optimal and safe (well, depending on the tune you are doing).

That makes sense ... however, do you need supporting mods? or does this apply to a totally stock MSP?

The more aggressive maps were tuned around intake and exhaust (CS/Injen). But a car would not require those things for a Unichip to be installed.

I know for a fact that there has been at least one MSP that has blown the motor while using the Unichip. However, there were no CEL's and no visible signs of detonation. Mazda techs diagnosed the failure as a result of a factory defect with one of the wrist pins.

So nothing to do with the unichip? Thanks for the info.

Thats possibly one, how many have blown with stock ems, or other aftermarket ems? I take mine to the track too, and the unichip hasnt let me down yet. even when i ran the unichip on stock boost, it felt like a different car. smooth and no hesitation or fuel cut.

Not saying that it had nothing to do with Unichip. Unichip pushes the engine a little harder so it is bound to put some increased stress on internals, etc. However, there is a large chance that it would have happened without the Unichip, due to the faulty wrist pin.

Alot more have blown with the stock ecu only than with any type of aftermarket EMS. I don't know the actual numbers though. Also, I agree with you about how an MSP feels with the unichip. It really does feel like a different car.
