Has anybody used the "accelerator kick down switch" feature?

I have this feeling on my MINI, but the detent is not present on our 2013 2.0 You can really mash on the peddle and get a 2 gear downshift no problem, but not it sounds as if mazda put a slight tactile feel in there to help differentiate downshifting 1 v s 2 gears. It makes sense, with how quickly these cars upshift; if you need to go-go just press harder, not you know you are pressing harder.

My 13' doesn't have the "step button" but it does go down 1 or 2 gears is putting the metal to the floor. Better yet I just go into manual mode and find 3rd gear for the street...or 4th on the highway. Ample power to pass even on hills. Not too shabby for a 2.0L in a SUV.

I've had it on the BMW (steptronic) and Volkswagen CC (tiptronic?). Not sure what Mazda calls theirs.

My 2013 sport has a kick down switch in the center consol. I just slide the lever over to the left, push up, and it kicks down whenever I need it to. Does your 2014 have this feature? ;)

Yes, but the time you go through that 2 step (or more) process, the other driver in CX-5 who just slammed pedal to floor has easily passed you (with or without the step button) because he/she downshifted faster. The manual mode is fun though and especially useful for control on long descents.:)

I usually use auto mode when in moderate to heavy traffic. Switch over to manual mode during the weekends or when there's sparse traffic. Nothing like having the best of both worlds, have fun, and still get good gas mileage.

The 2-gear downshift via pedal feature (button or no button) is usefull for merging unto faster traffic although I keep forgetting to experiment on turning off the traction control to see if there's a difference in power delivery to the wheels.
