handymen? carpentiers? Plumbers?

handymen? carpenters? Plumbers?

ok, I'm going way off topic here, but maybe some homeowners car appreciate this

I have had my bathroom tub, and tub kit installed. The guy doing it....well....I won't call him names, but he started Sat. morning, and it's now Thursday, and we are still at it.

Without listing the disasters that happened, I'll make a long story short

Tub was actually done Monday night. Siliconed late monday night. Had first shower Wednesday morning, noticed leaking taps. inside the wall too :(

In the process of tryign to fix the leak, a wrench was dropped, and there is a little chip in my tub. It's an acrylic tub. I've heard there are ways to fix chips in there, but I don't know anything else about it. if it wasn't new, I'd say forget it. But, I might as well try to fix it now.

Is there some sort of paste or kit that can fill in the chip, and give back the original finish?

I have heard of people cracking these acrylic tubs, and fixing them somehow. So, there's got to be a simple way to fix in a tiny chip.

call home depot.. they make an acrylic filler compound.. its kinda like a bondo.. but i donno how u go about colormatching or blending it. -=\
home depot knows everything.. they 0wn

That's why I always pressure test everything before closing up the wall. It's a pain in the ass to do it twice. Make the guy fix it like new. If he's a licensed/bonded contractor then he has to, there's no if's and's or but's about it. If he's just a buddy then you're S.O.L. You paid to have a NEW tub put in, not a slightly used/chipped/filled tub. Take pictures of everything and DO NOT SIGN OFF ON THE JOB OR PAY A DIME TILL YOU ARE HAPPY!

A good plumber will always test these things out twice before the wall gets closed- make him fix it, and if he chipped the tub- unless he can make it look brand new- make him buy you a new one- definitely do not pay him until it is fixed to your satisfaction- go with what ryan said for sure..

I just noticed that you're in Canada... Don't know about the laws in Canada. I do know that I'd rather take a short term hit and do a job right than have somebody tell 10 of their friends that I'm an asshole crook.

NewF,

There is an acrylic filler you can buy at home depot. It's like touch up paint for your tub. There was a chip in my tub at my parent's home and he used this. It woked for awhile, just looked like touch up paint (but did the job). you do have the option of resurfacing the tub, but that's a lot of $$$ and time as well. Your call man :(

I completely understand what you're going through. I'm regrouting the tile in my master bath by myself! :( [/offtopic]

Like Mad Ryan said, if he's licensed and bonded, his insurance should cover parts and labor to replace the tub. I wouldn't settle for a repair job. Repairing a tub is similar to auto body repair. Like mypfizzle said, it is just like Bondo.

This is why I do everything myself. My wife and I completely redid our kitchen in the spring. Only thing I didn't do was run the new natural gas pipes, and redo the eletric for the center island. Anything that could blow up the house, I leave for the professional.

Anyway, you can sand out chips in acrylic tubs, if they are not that deep. Basically you have to wet sand it with like 1200-1500 grit sandpaper. Might not be perfect, but you can make it look a lot better.

Or a worker who had one too many cold ones on the job! (beer)

lol..

Newf, hows is he accessing the leak? does he have to tear the wall apart? What is on the shower wall where the faucet/diverter is..tile, fiberglass ect.

Remember boys... Wrap yer tool...

Actually... I have some wrenches that are wraped with rags/ductape and I use thick moving blankets and tape to keep tubs from not only getting dinged but from getting scratched when I'm sitting/standing in them. We've all dropped stuff, it really sucks when you drop something and it breaks something tho...

lol my dad hates people doing stuff for him his moto is "Dont worry its easy i can do it" lmao he Never brought any of his cars to a shop, He did the electrical wires threw our house while it was being built (he is a computer engineer with electrical enginner major too) and he changed his room from rug to tile, my sis room from rug to wood. Re did his hole shower tile and re did the tile and tub in my bath room lol. so if you want it done right do it yourself is pretty much what i say and same with my dad as u can see.
Edit: i would of done it my self cause u know the Job quality, when some one else does it they usually make the job half fast and jus get out of there

....took so long to get back to this thread as we were trying to fix the leak.

But....think we have the leak. Luckily, we only needed to cut a small 3" square hole on the wall behind it. Not a big deal anyways, since I'm in the middle of painting that room. turns out, the back end of one pipe, the one that goes up to the shower head, wasn't completely soldered. Hence the leak, only when the shower was on. He did test this before installing everything...seen it myself. I even came in and tried everything too before letting them install the kit. not sure why the leak happened afterwards, just hope it's the only one.

As for the tub and small nick....it's small, really small. not worth getting the guy to **** up another week of my life. I had to take 2 days vacation as it is.

Think I'll run up and get that acrylic touch up stuff. Tub is glossy white, so maybe there's some hope in matching it a little easier.

thanks guy, I appreciate all the suggestions.

This site is still awesome.

you lucked out that you had acess from behind.. Little projects like that can drag on forever..
