H.P. Needed

(bang) I am needing to know how to get the most bang for my buck. I am tight on $$$$, so I am wanting to know what the best route would be for the MP3. I have a SRI and a Ractive univ. muffler. I do not want to go forced induction. It currently has around 48K miles. If anyone can help it would be helpful. And $$$$$ is always tight, seeing how I am in the military. (usa)

get a header...what branch are you in? im a 13M20 in the Army reclassing to 97E2PF :D

it would help to know what year and and engine displacement

edit: read it again and he said mp3

id go header and catback to start off, with a custom catback it should only run you around 4-~550.

later: cams and cam gears

Being in the USMC it is pretty friggin tight. I have been looking at thi CAI and 4-2-1 hedder. After that I will probly get a cat back. And thanx for the welcome

You could also look into Ntrous for the money....it's technically *not* FI, and if you rig the system *right* it can be fail safe. It'll only spray when you WOT if you want. Granted...that's not really really cheap, but for the money it's hard to beat a 25 shot. Other than that, look into headers and removing the CATs if you can. Don't go too big on the exhaust either, or you'll just lose power.

dont get a cai since you've already got a sri.

since you've already got the muffler, i'd say just get a high flow cat and cat back made up. that'll give you a few whp and shouldnt be too expensive. next then headers, next custom cams

forgot the cams and everything else...I started FI, so I tend not to think of that stuff! hehe! Twilight is the guy to ask, though...silly Aussies!

hey, i also have the same question, most bang for my buck, i have and 2003.5 mazdaspeed protege, wit a injen CAI, the car doesnt even have 8,000 on it, but i was looking into a full cat-back, then prolly a boost control? i have about $800 to play with, what do u guys think i should get?

800$ for a cat-back and boost controller? You could do that for about 500$ cheap I think. Look at the stickies in the MSP section...one of them is an aftermarket guide.

how fast are you looking to go? that should be a resonable question to ask aswell.. i spent around a grand... and all i got was a lousy 16.2. which i guess isnt bad. but that was cams, exhaust, cai, springs, and a ss. i'm still looking into an intake manafold and possably cam gears before i venture down the fi route.

depends...if you look in my sig, you'll see that i got 8whp from my cams, but they are obviously way to big for the stock exhaust system. smaller cams than what i have would yield more power with the stock exhaust system, but once i have a full exhaust system it will be a different story.

see basically it all comes down to what your plans are. do you get cams that suit you now and new cams later etc....i went for cams that will suit me later, and hopefully that later will be the end of the month when the exhaust is in....fingers crossed, but i'm aiming for 150whp with the mods i have with tuning the adjustable cam gears in to suit.

1) intake (already have it)
2) Muffler (already have it)
3) headers
4) remove the rest of your exhuast (incl cat) replace with strait pipe
5) cams
6) pistons
7) spark plug wires 1WHP, oh wow
8) grounding kit
9) blue led licence plate screws

Remember, the WC Proteges are 220whp all FI. We have a few of the crew guys on here as members. I'm sure they could tell you a few things, since the proteges are likely in their last season or two. They *do* have to rebuild every couple of races, but the info they can give you is a high model to work from. You can just scale it back a bit.
