I went to pick up my plates today at the dealer for the new P5 (which my wife and I LOVE) and I asked my salesman about when I get to drive the RX8 he promised. He said, "whenever". I said, "How about now?"
He didn't look too excited.
He had just sent out a couple in a test drive of a 6s.
But, he is cool and went and got the keys.
Just for the record, I don't really like the looks of the RX8 that much. Bad profile.
Anywho, the interior is super comfy and very natural feeling. I can always tell when a car is just right because you can push it right off the bat. Kind of like the P5.
First thing I noticed was the sound of the rotary engine. That thing sounds hella awesome! Has this sweet "whirl" noise to it.
The engine is kind of like a DOHC VTEC on crack. Not much low end, but gets exciting really fast as the revs grow. Around 5000 rpm, things get fast in a hury.
I was only on a short drive as he had to get back for the couple who was coming back shortly.
I took a short drive on a four lane road and then joined up with a local freeway. Smaller one with not alot of traffic. My saleman is young and cool so he was really telling me to push it.
And I did.
110 mph on a test drive. Crazy I know, but the thing pulls very hard. He says he has had them overnight and gotten them to 140 easily before.
We would be driving around at like 70 and he would have me downshift into 3 and floor it right away! I would never do this to my cars, but it is fun when you don't pay the repair bill. In case you have never done this in a high horsepower car (which I hadn't) I will tell you that it is a jolt. Slams you back in the seat pretty good. Probably not the nicest thing to do to the drivetrain, but oh well, not my car.
Was only about a ten minute drive but left with a smile. We all know how well the P5 handles stock. Well, after I got back into my P5 after the drive, it felt sloppy. I couldn't believe it. If I had had the Integra, I probably would have had to pull over and collect myself because the Integra cannot handle well.
Anyway, if you get the chance, take one out. The sound of a rotary at 8500 rpm is BEAUTIFUL.
