Goofy air box inlet

What is the deal with the air box inlet. It routes to the front right behind the grill but doesn't really get much air there. Is it just to keep the inlet away from the heat, or a bad attempt at ram air?

air inlet

Lose it, you will be thankful you did. Took mine off and fabricated my own temporary CAI for about $7. Got everything I needed at Home Depot.
Parts list:
Aluminum dryer ducting
rubber pipe clamp
male pipe fitting
one 2" screw
Directions:
Take off ridiculous restrictive air inlet(leave the filter box and everything between it and the engine)
Test fit dryer ducting to the box and down through the circular opening in the drivers side fenderwell. Will have to bend the windshield washer fluid reservoir bracket a little bit to get it to fit.
You want the end of the ducting to go all the way to the edge of your lower front bumper grill, as so it can suck up all the cold air it can handle! This will take some creative manuevering on your part. Attach the clamps to hold everything in place and there you go, cheap CAI. If you're worried about sucking water into your engine it shouldn't happen, I've had mine on for about three months now with no problems. Another thing you need to watch is hood clearance, I had to bend the ducting a little to get the hood to close.

ive asked this question repeadely....if i take off both parts is it fine like thta?

YES!! DO IT!! IT'S O.K.!!:D I have done a similar mod and I think it's the best alternative to a CAI. Cheap too.

I will try and post photo's if I can ever find a digi to borrow.

Yep, I've had my "Air Intake Silencer" off for about 14,000 miles now. You'll notice a difference in sound, even with the stock paper filter. With a K&N drop in, and the silencer removed, you'll get a little better throttle response in the 4250-5250RPM range. Well worth the 10 seconds it takes to remove the silencer. Oh yeah, I left the 2nd piece you're talking about on. The part right next to the filter box, so that if, by some strange accident, water got in the intake pipe, that part would route it away before it got to the box. The Dryer hose would be another good way to go too, if you wanted a little cooler air.

I'll try and post some pictures when I get home tonight...
Just to make sure everyone is talking about the same parts.

Cheap CAI

Sorry guys I can't post any pics, I don't have a digital or a scanner. Install is all common sense stuff. If you can turn a wrench, you can do this.(rockon)

Alright dammit, here it is... My krappy ass web space provider wouldn't let me link to pictures anymore, so I had to write an .html page in my damn text editor... Anyways, here you go...

Thx for the pics. Would there be any difference between routing the "dryer hose" to the fender well compared to the front grill (a la "ram air")?

It's way to cold to go look, but the stock part that keeps water from entering the intake...how does it work? Is there a drain? What I'm thinking is if I route the "dryer hose" to the front grill...and get sloppy and shoot a wad of water into the grill while washing the car...will that be a bad thing?

Nice Pics
I left the water collector on also, makes it kind of a b**** to get the ducting to clear the hood!
By the way, where did you get those plug wires and what brand are they? I can't find any anywhere! Thanx!!(blackp5)

Thanks man.
I bet clearing the hood with the water bypass on was a b****. If the roads didn't flood here all the time, I would go ahead and use a dryer hose or get an Injen even... but I've literally had to drive through a foot of water on the hwy here before, and I don't want to chance it.

I bought the Wires (9.0mm Sparkco) from here on the site (it's now at http://www.sparkcoonline.com/). This thread here should have all the information you're looking for, including where to order, and the benefits of the wires. I think I paid $45 for shipping from Canada. They helped smooth out the idle somewhat, and get rid of the "jumpiness" of first gear. I noticed a 1.74MPG on average for the 5 tanks of gas after I installed them. I travel ~50 miles on the interstate everyday, and it seems to be a good way to check things like that. At any rate, I was really happy with purchase,...

Here are some photo's I took this weekend of my "ghetto style home depot intake", and some other photo's as well. Not the greatest quality, but you get the idea. Some people have requested pic's, so here they are. I see there are other pic's of this as well. Here is what mine look's like. Flame away if you think it's rice.:D Or just call me uncle Ben!:p

Anyway, hope you like em'.

Yeah...i'm convinced by removing the stock intake piping, most cars will LOSE power...reason being...

Even with the dryer hose stuff, the air the car injests is warmer than before. Metal hose will conduct, and transfer engine heat more than thicker plastics...and there is evidence that the silencer boxes can contribute to engine torque production - at least in the miata world. I'd be hesitant to simply remove the stuff without any data to support the claim of 'increased performance'. If a true Cold Air intake, relocating the filter to draw from a cooler air source exists, that'd be the only effect replacement, imho.

interesting point. i just took off my silencer, and it SEEMS to be a bit more responsive, but it may be all in my head. anyone else have anything to say about the heat situation or the torque loss? it seems to me that with the turbulence of the air in the engine compartment heat shouldnt be too big of an issue.

A number of times, a loss in torque, followed by the motor finally getting back to where it SHOULD be, is percieved as a "gain"... Heat is a HUGE issue with regards to dryer hose intakes...hot piping makes for hot air, and the purpose is to allow COOLER air into the engine. :)

Placing the filter at the beginning of the pipe, rather than the end of the pipe (as per dryerhose to oem airbox) allows, perhaps, for the air turbulence to be corrected, after it passes through the filter, etc...maybe? I'm speculating.

get rid of that box. you can get a cone style filter and it will attach to the stock hose. it allows alot more air in that the silencer and the stock filter. you can tell the diferance. i would not worry about getting water that high if you do you got other problems. and if you dont think there is a dference just put the old stuff back takes about 5 minutes.
