Good oil?

Anyone know what the typical MAZDA dealer uses?

we bought our P5 used, (with plenty of great service records) at 124 K, and my wife INSISTS I take it to the dealer for it's first oil change under us.... (freak)

I've looked throught the records, and although it seem 5w/30 has been the norm, cant seem to figure out if they kept is standard or synthetic....(dunno)
I was thinking of "from here forward" as long I I have it, synthetic.

Dealers use whatever brand they like, as long as it fits manufacturers specs. Could be any 5/30.

Was it for the better?

Absolutely not. It was a bean-counting call. Group III is cheaper than Group IV, yet still called 'synthetic'. Who's gonna know, without sending it off for testing at the lab? And who does that*?

I've run just about everything and in actuality you probably aren't going to notice a difference. I bought my car with 34k on it and made the switch to full synthetic not too long after. I've tried everything from Mobil 1 to Amsoil to Redline to Pennzoil. In all honesty I thought my car burned through Amsoil and Redline oils a lot faster than Mobil 1. I ran Mobil 1 for years and just recently switched to Pennzoil to try something different (and I heard good things about Pennzoil Platinum). So far so good as I've been burning less oil than before, but then again that might be due to the warmer weather. FWIW, I change my oil every 3000-5000 miles even with synthetic but then again my P5 is turbocharged and sees high engine speeds and oil temperatures frequently.

my subaru ate redline up pretty fast, so ymmv. odd, because its supposed to be pretty robust stuff.
